Congress rejecting improved fuel-efficiency standards

I dunno if anyone else has been paying attention to the news lately, but this whole situation is ridiculous. For those that don't know, here's what's up: There was a bill pushing for increasing average vehicle fuel economy to 35 miles/gallon by 2015 to reduce pollution and dependency on oil imported from the Middle East. Not surprisingly, it didn't get enough votes to pass because U.S. automakers and union workers argued the same BS they made up back in the 1970s. GM, Ford, and Chrysler argued that 35 miles/gallon would confine them to building subcompact cars only, and that the public is satisfied with and continues to want large, gas-guzzling land yachts (ie, Suburbans). The union autoworkers (WTF is this, 1890? When will unions go away!?) again complained the same thing as always; their jobs are at stake. Nevertheless, the bill wasn't passed and the US is stuck in this downward spiral of being the world's largest polluter and gold-metal winner in shooting itself in the foot.

I'm moving to London. Civic Type-R, baby!!!

Well at least us Civic owners have ULEV standards and get great MPG so at least we're helping. I think what it's going to take to get the attention of the public is for gas to go up up up again to over $2 a gallon; looks like thats where its going now. If the prices stablize around $1.75 (I live in FL) I bet people will drop those SUVs and go back to high milage cars, but until then we (USA) are going to keep driving our big cars. Now on the other hand we live in a wonderful country where the goverment doesn't dictate what we drive, (okay I know there are a few cars not allowed in this country) so we are free to choose what we want to drive. We could be living in Europe and paying $4.00 a gallon so I guess it could be a lot worse.

We'll see how much those SUV owners like their "land-yachts" once the gas prices start going sky-high again...
... which is gonna be real soon, since it looks like Bush Jr. is gonna go back and finish the job Bush Sr. started in Iraq 10 years ago

(Notice how the gas prices jump whenever Bush talks about Iraq? )

It's all about keeping the big two (there really isn't the big three anymore) going, which is understandable in some ways, and all that GM and Ford really have left are SUV's and trucks. They can only sell the cars in volume to the rental fleet companies and government entities.

I think that in 10 years we will start seeing signs of the depletion of middle east oil. Of course that has been predicted for years now and it hasn't happened yet, but with more and more people buying bigger and bigger trucks, I can't see it not having an impact on the supply.

I don't think that they will evere pass that law, mainly because of the fact that congress is trying to keep the american car manufactures in business. Why is that, on word: KICK BACKS to the representatives. The only way that we will ever pass this law is when people realize that owning a vehicle that gets over 20 mpg to the city, IS A GOOD THING NOT A BAD THING. People are stupid in thinking that owning a Expedition, Explorer, Yukon or any big A$$ SUV is a status symbol. You want a status symbol look to mercedes, bmw, or do I dare say FERRARI. My god I laugh and feelpity for people that own those vehicles, think about the money they spend on gas and on repairs..

HAHAHAHAHAHA,
The owners are not bright to own those vehicles, but as long as we keep telling them that they are looked up to because they drive this vehicle, that bill will never get passed.

Just my $.02

Joe

P.S. Just some FYI, there only is Ford and GM as an american company,
Chrysler corp was bought by mercedes, that means mercedes know has rights to Dodge, jeep, plymouth, chrysler and any other DSM products

Simple supply and demand, if Americans want their SUVs and other big vehicles, they should be able to get them. As much as I hate most of the drivers that buy a larger car than they need, this is a free market capitalist country and I don't want any damn laws telling me I can only buy cars that get a certain mpg.... also, just because they pass a law doesn't mean it will always work out. Hell, they passed the clean air act so many years ago and many cities still have never been in compliance with it.
