New Eclipse...and why shouldn't we have gotten one?
I'd like to know the ups and downs of the new Eclipse....so far, i love them. An acquaintance of mine has an 02 V6...its quick....but how are the four bangers? As far as the engine, do they employ valve timing or anything else cool?....just wondering what everyone's opinion is.
based on being a bodyman and seeing the quality and workmanship put into the car i would say it is a pile of junk!! My wife also has a 99 dodge avenger which is the same as a eclipse!! And she has had tanny troble and has both window regulators cease to work! So based on expirience they are crap!!!!

i do not like the new eclipse body, looks like it was wrapped in soemthing and then let go... i think it looks fugly, i liked the older eclipse... they basically turned the eclipse into the new 3000gt, it looks about the same size.. but not as agressive, and slow
The 4cy is your basic 2.4L mitsubishi SOHC 4cyl. The one i drove is very smooth, but my basis for comparison is a neon with solid motor mounts. It's a much bigger car than a civic, and not nearly as practical. I'd go for the V6 if it was me.
<< All the new generation Eclipses are slower then ours, and VERY hard to launch. Even the V-6's run 16s.... >>
I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions, the manual V6 models run mid 15s, which is probably quicker than most EX coupes are gonna run. There are guys in the 14s with just intake and exhaust.

Mitsubishi has the worse Japanese cars on the market... Chrysler owns a big amount of Mitsubishi and unfortunately that makes their cars modernly "American made." The engines in the 2nd gen Eclipses were American, but you could build the bottom end of them up somewhat. If you're gonna get an Eclipse, get a 1st generation GSX as back then Mitsubishi had no affiliation with Chrysler, and their 1st generation GSX was the fastest Eclipse ever made. In terms of appearance, I like the look of the 2nd gen Eclipse (but I also like the similar more aggressive look of the Supra non-turbo... I wouldn't be surprised if the look of the 2nd gen Eclipse was stolen from Toyota's masterpiece). The new Eclipse is ugly but the interior is nice, but would get old. It doesn't have as much aftermarket support because it's not that popular as the previous generations, and build quality and safety SUCK. This was actually one of the cars I looked at while I chose to buy a new car... stick with the Civic. The Eclipse is also VERY OVERPRICED. The top of the line GT with a V6 in it is around $25,000. If you want performance I'd go with an RSX Type S which is cheaper, more reliable, looks good, and will get you more girls in your car everyday as the Eclipse will get you girls every lunar eclipse. It's not a smart buy... you can top it @140MPH but so can the Integra Type R, but the Type R will reach 140 MUCH quicker. (You can make the GS-R faster), you could go for a Subaru Impreza WRX, a Toyota Celica GT-S and use that much money for something better and have some on the side. And I don't see the point of getting a 4-cylinder Eclipse unless it's a 1st or 2nd generation unless you wanna save a few thousand for a slower car and bring the price down to the amount of an RSX Type S. Conclusion? Mitsubishi is bullsh't. Wait for the Lancer if you don't mind a sedan where 90% of it's parts come from Japan as the Eclipse here is probably around 25% Japanese.

They look nice and are quick but they are not the safest cars out there. I know, I would not want to get in an accident while in one of those suckers.
My wife has an 01 eclipse GS 4 banger. I think it just rolled 5000 miles and we have had it for a year. So far we have had no trouble with it. I dont like it that well but its hers. I know my civic is faster than it is. We are trying to sell it right now because she needs a 4 door car for her new job. I also had a 98 eclipse GS and it was a piece of $hit. The new eclipses seem to be a little better of a car than the old ones.
Ever notice how the Dodge stratus/Chrysler sebring have almost exactly the same shape? Not to mention the same Engines? Keep in mind that over the next couple years Mitsubishi will be getting better because Daimler Benz is now in full control of both Mitsubishi and Chrysler, but right now, both of those brands are sh*t from a quality standpoint. You'll be MUCH better off with a WRX, or if you're looking in the lower(4cyl) price range, the Celica would be better.
The new Eclipses also have sh'tty transmissions... by 5000 miles you shouldn't notice anything cuz everything under the hood is still practically new. If you drive it 5000 every year, then you've got about 2-3 more years on it before a problem occurs.

wtf are you talking about? People on Club RSX with Type S' say they have problems keeping up with GT's...which means a 2k1 wont even be close with it. GS yes but GT you are out of your damn mind.
As for the new eclipse

Yea, I didn't even consider them because of the manufacturer and the size. I did look at the vdubs but they are basically pos and sentra spec v. Ultimately, I went with the vic over the spec-v because of my past experience with 5 other hondas.
<< The engines in the 2nd gen Eclipses were American, but you could build the bottom end of them up somewhat. >>
That only applies to the '95-99 non-turbo models. And i guess 600-700 HP (for the chrysler motor) is only "somewhat".
The engine in the turbo models has always been a mitsubishi product.
<< If you're gonna get an Eclipse, get a 1st generation GSX as back then Mitsubishi had no affiliation with Chrysler, and their 1st generation GSX was the fastest Eclipse ever made. >>
You got that backwards. The later model ones had more mitsubishi influence. The earlier ones were a chrysler design (See the 1987 Plymouth XS concept) That is why in '89 there were 2 chrysler models and 1 mitsubishi model, and in '99 there was only the mitsubishi model.
<< Its very simple... Honda Prelude
It's a better choice. There's more room... better brakes, better build quality, better engine, better look, better traction control, better seating adjustment. The only thing that lets the Prelude down (last generation) is it's aged interior and the sound of it's engine... personally to me, it's too quiet. (One had passed me doing like 115 on the freeway at night and I knew it was a Prelude from the sound of it's engine... it wasn't that loud and it was losing to the other car it was racing, hehehe.) The engines in our Civics are louder (perhaps because the engine bay is so small and the engine is closer to the driver than in the Prelude).

In terms of under the hood, everything was Japanese until the 2nd gen Eclipses... which got Chrysler engines. Right now, I know they don't have those engines under the hood but my point was Chrysler today owns a big portion of Mitsubishi... that's why I call it ChryslerBishi cuz the quality of their Japanese cars are still American. I wonder about the Lancer, though... can't say nothin until it gets here!

I was aware of that but they were still sh'tty *** turbo engines in terms of quality.

<< i read an article on how the sentra ser's are mad slow, they are supposed to put out 175 but only dynoed at like 140 >>
Race one and let me know how it goes. They aren't slow. Nissan may have just overstated the engines output.
My best friend has a 2001 Eclipse GT and I've driven it and it is much quicker than my Civic. He has exhaust and intake, it's an automatic with the sport shift and it runs low 16's. I've raced him and I beat him off the line by a car length but by 30 mph he spanked me pretty good, so I can tell you first hand that they are very quick cars.
They're quick... great acceleration. My bro with a GS-R was shocked to know that the Type S has an opponent... the Eclipse.
The 2nd gen Eclipse was the first car I actually liked!... and almost bought for 5Gs! It was a black 95 RS 5-speed. I am glad I didn't get it though I had my sights set on a GSX. After hearing what happened to Kori and s2000guy's GSXs (engine failed on both cars) ... I don't want it anymore unless i could drop a VTEC in it. (When i get rich! the car just looks good to me, that's all.)
