I saw for the 06 civic, if you want to add xm to your factory "xm ready" cd player/navi you need a kit from honda that costs $400 for the tuner and equipment. wtf? At best buy i see kits from $20-$100. Who do they think will buy that?

Its 650 from BMW for sirius. They can charge whatever they want, its honda. Meanwhile you'll figure out why everyone just goes to best buy

actually the 400$ charge is for lifetime membership never another bill for the sirius service at all. I know this due to considering adding it to my current clarion HU

dma001 is an unknown quantity at this point
I know that I was amazed when the accessories rep came in to talk to me during the purchase of my '01 sedan:
$500 + labor for spoiler; $399 for tint; $250 for floormats; $500 + labor for foglights...

...uh, no thanks, I'll pass.

no man, they arent talking about membership fees. gearbox is talking about to add the xm hardware to a new civic, from the dealer. adding the hardware itself, no service included.

Its easy for car dealers to add "accessories" onto the purchase of a vehicle because most people finance and instead of it being "$400" like it is to us, to the person financing see's it as just "$1" extra on there car payment.
We do dealership work (I work at a car audio dealer part time) and those people almost double what we charge for stuff when they sell a car (We sell a NAV unit to a dealer for $1700, they mark it at $3000 to the customer).

haha, they were gonna rip you off, however i did get stuff for free from the dealer, free 7 year warranty, 3 free oil change, 3 free tanks of gas, free floormats, free teflon coating on paint, free scotchguarding, and a free safegard security system. they really wanted me to buy the car for some reason... but that was the selling style of the sales person i guess, he'll take a cut in commission by paying for some of the stuff himself to sell his car, i recommended him to my friend, he got a similar treatment from him, got free mudguards and other accessories. too bad hes not there anymore. he was a very good sales person, sold enough cars to have himself a s2k.

i laughed at my other friend tho, he got an oem accord spoiler installed at the dealer $700!

Because they sale very little quantities relatively speaking, that is why the price is high compare to bestbuy who sales electrinics for a living.

No you are wrong. Have you ever sold car audio? 400 is way too much for the cheapest quality stuff. figure after install the mark up is 3 times on speaker 2.5 on decks 2-2.5 on video and sat.

No, I am not a radio sales person. Are you?

I only referred to a basic economical reason.

Didn't the thread starter say bestbuy is selling the same unit for much less? Are you following the thread at all?

Maybe I should clarify. The following applies only to coupes.

As I said before, you only need to "add" it to the non-navi models. The navi radio does not need the accessory, only the monthly subscription

Yes, yes I was. I had accounts with car dealerships. It has nothing to do with the # they sale. They never really own the part. Lets say someone comes in and says "I want a Denali but it needs a drop down and I need it by tomorrow" they say ok and up the price by 4k. The car and the screen now technically belong to the buyer. The dealer drives the car to the audio shop and buys a screen and all the accessories and install for about 1000 total. Then they pocket the other 2 grand. It happens every day. Car buyers pay some porter well over a grand to drive their brand new cars to the local audio shop. So if you think about it the audio shop pays 400 for a screen, the car dealer pays 1000 for the screen, and you pay 4000 for the screen. thats 10 times the original price.

The idea is "If the dealer installs it its under warranty" Well no its not. When it would break they dealer would simply make an appointment with their customer and drive the car to us. So it took more time to fix. It also means that you miss out on the chance to talk directly with the person fixing the problem. So often times it doesnt get fixed to your standards. Its comedy.

Basic economical reason only works in the books.
