Serious Race: 1999 Civic Si vs. 93-97 Jetta VR6(?)

Theres an @$$hole I know who claims how slow my Si is since Ive gotten it. At that time he had a Nissan Stanza which he said was so much faster than it. Now he has a body style before the Newest Jetta and when I was arguing with him I saw the back tag said GLX (but it was far away so i couldnt see the VR6), and he claims it a VR6. When he looked at my engine he laughed and said it was the same engine as the EX and how its so slow.

His car is bone stock. I have Intake, exhaust, and a VAFC which engages my VTEC at 4500rpm. Also my coilovers are here and im going to drop it, and a friend said he can temporaily install his ZEX in my Si if I want it - what do you think, tell this guy to put his money where his mouth is? A dude I know has a Jetta VR6, and it doesn't seem that fast. I would say go for it Neo, you should be able to kick his German car's *** !! A Civic Si plus those mods, vs. a what, 190 HP Jetta that weighs more...i would say go for it, but just in case, don't put too much money on it

Car and Driver says:

1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLX
0-60mph - 6.9s
1/4mile - 15.5s@91mph

1999 Honda Civic Si
0-60mph - 7.1s
1/4mile - 15.7s@88mph

so as you can see they're quite even...but you have mods...so i still say GIVER!
(keep in mind that it has to do with the driver..but i'm sure you know that)

Neo, are you a good driver? I think this would be a driver's race. I would definitely install the juice, just for added security. a winner is a winner I always say, hehe.

now that I start looking at the specs the only thing I see where it dominates is torque. 0-60 seems to flux between 6.9 -7.2, while the Si is 7.0-7.4. 2990 lbs to the Si's 2550lbs minus the seats and spare tire ill be removing, maybe more, also the fact that I have modifications. Hes a huge $hit talker so I doubt he'll even show up friday night.

The numbers for the cars are close enough to race him without squeezing. It's gonna be a driver's race. Shut him up...

if you have about $100, now would be a good time to put it up. I would still install the juice in case he has some. don't want to lose that way.

change the VTEC switch over to 5K rpm. 4500 is too low, and there is actually a decrease in peformance if u make the switch over point too low in the RPM band. That being said, Its a drivers race. If you can drive the car right, you should be able to pull ahead by the end of the 1/4 mile (although his torque advantage will put him ahead till the 1/8 unless he cant drive and only uses the torque to spin his tires. Id reccomend practicing this technique. Go find a road to practice launching and try this. Bring the RPMs up to about 5000 RPM and slip the clutch while modulating the gas. If its done correctly you will be able to get off the line with minimal wheel spin (too much wheel spin and your letting off the clutch too fast, not enough and u know its too slow) all the while keeping the tach above 5K and in vtec for the entire launch (and for the entire run). Also out tac is off. My fuel cut off comes in at a registered 8500 RPM where it should be at 8200, so its also advisable to take your car to the fuel cut once or twice to see exactly where you should shift. In my car, as i said, that would be at a registered 85-8600. If i shifted at 8K i wouldnt be using the engines/gearings full potential. Anyway, with this launch technique i was able to pull off consistant 15.4s/15.3s when i was stock. Ah, and dont forget to chuch your spare and jack as well as decrease the front tire pressure. i hope you dont have those crappy stock tires still.

BTW if u get that zex kit youll destroy him, but undoubetly hell call you on it ad say you cheat.

Neo... smoke'im.

(Neo's gonna win, don't worry.)

Nitrous? I don't think you'll need it for this unless you want a guaranteed win. Accept the challenge! Your car should out-do his anyway.

I'll show friday night, we'll see if he does.

Joe my VTEC is actually set at 4800rpm, and I was going to decrease it to 4500 - Ill just leave it where it is now. I know this guy dosnt have Nitrous...this guys so poor im surprised he could afford a Jetta.

Just my 2 cents here.

I had a civic Si. I would race VR6's and USUALLY beat them. If you are a good driver, and he's a big fat guy, then you can beat him. Just get a good drop off the line, and he's all yours. I raced a lot of them, since there is a lot of VR6's around here.... (apparently there are a lot of guys confused about their sexuality around here, so they drive volkswagons)

Well a Jetta GLS MKIII is a 2.0 115. Even with a 5spd they are still slow. All they serve is to be strong running engines. I can beat Jetta GLX VR6 in the twisties with my 84 VW, but lose on straights. Also all new VW are bandwagen type cars and many new owners disrespect the A1 and A2 cars(The last Real profmance type VW was a Corrado which was an A2, the New Gti is not a real Gti like the Gti 16v from the past), unlike their orginal watercools and aircools. YOu can proabaly beat if its an auto or in the hight end I think.
