Random thought about the 8th gen.
This is just a thought. Doesn't it seem like the 7th gen civic is the last civic? Im just saying, if you were in a coma since '92 and you just woke up, someone could easily fool you into thinking the 8th gen civic is an the new accord (except for the badges, duh)... It's like an entirely new car, it seems bigger, and it doesn't even have 4 lug wheels. Not that I really care that much. Just a little weird.

um yea thats what i've been saying. it feels like some other car, especially once you're inside. There is no trace of civic left. The 7thgen was like this too, but it still had a little connection. Imo the 6thgen was the last real civic. RIP

I jsut bought a car with Bseries in it, much cheaper
Anyway, yeah the 7thgen's stopped the double wishbone and all that, totally different car. I guess Honda is just making room for the Jazz or whatever it's called. Actually I think they are moving all there cars up, compare an eraly 90's Accord with one today (I've owned both) those are even MORE different than the civic's. Honda is growing

I have to agree, though. The classic "Civic" is no more.
For some reason I did not like the 1996-2000 Civics I would prefer the 1993 models.. I love the 7th Gen, even though it looks very different from the other civic models this is probably why I like it so much. BUT as for the 8th Gen I have to admit this is the most horrible design ever.

ehhh... I would say tehy are becoming a bigger company. Now they are big enough to compete agianst cars like the ford tuarus, 15 years ago the Accord was nothing like a Tuarus. They are just moving up in the world and reaching to new markets. So yeah, I guess they are kind of adapting. Instead of just coming out with a new line of car, they just slwoly moving existing car up with each redesign. It's actually quite smart if you consdier most car companies just scrap one model after a few years and start over with a new car.

I still think honda should do a limited production run of the 2000 si again and call it aniversary editiion or something. I know a ton of people would buy one, myself included.

even tho people would like it its never gonna happen...when was the last time u've seen a car manufacturer do a reproduction of an older model...although i would like it to and get one instead of an 06 but it'll never happen
No b-series/ good old d-series = no cheap horsepower anymore
, its getting to damn expensive to modify civic's now, and i think honda will pay. Less kids will buy them cause its to much $$ to make them move.
Good old Bseries turbo kits go for around $1500-2000. A D series S'C just sold here for $900 ( 1400 canadian). thats stupid cheap for 150+whp.

Anyway, I like the now compact Civic. They're available as luxery cars overseas, well, not BMW fighter cars, but more like last gen Jetta's. They've got leather and other nice features but are on a less than Bimmer price. You can't move a car down market. It won't work. You could move it sideways, or up. By sideways, I mean you could shift the car from sporty to touring while keeping the price relatively similar (adjusted after inflation and costs). Upmarket obviously means putting in more features.
The 8th gen actually bridges the gap between whats available overseas and what we get here. I would still like to see leather in a Civic. It does have nav though, which I can't complain about.

I haven't seen any 8th Gen in person, so I am not making any judgment on the new Civic. However, I think that Civics are getting better generation after generation. Look at my sig and you should realize how they "grow"

Civics are changing--they're getting more upscale. Frankly I'm happy about it. I'm sick of Civic being equated with ricey cars with goofy oversized wings, loud mufflers that add <2 HP at the cost of +50 decibels, ginormous tach meters despite having an engine and bulky flywheel that cruises to the redline.

look guys, the 7th gen is alot better looking even though it don't have the potential to be made faster than older gens. in saying that, honda had to redeem itself for making a shitty SI. 03 to 05s sucked ***. a hairy ***. so the new SI is here to take back the road from celicas and Tcs. im keeping my 7th gen. its still a civic even though some of you think that the 6th gen was the last gen. every 5 years honda changes stuff around. thats the way it is. lets enjoy it. maybe the fit/jazz will be the next gen that everyone starts to trick out. ya never know

It's only a couple inches bigger and not a whole lot heavier than the 7th gen. That's actually good news regarding handling unless you are autocrossing which is more about slow and tight turns, longer = better on a track, wider as well.
The real good news is the R18, which is smaller, lighter, faster, and still gets the same fuel economy.
As has been said, overal torsional rigidity is up 35% (!!!!!), and the suspension is very nice as well, even for the sedan which is:
Control-Link MacPherson Strut Front Suspension
Reactive-Link Double Wishbone Rear Suspension
Stabilizer Bar (mm., front/rear): 24.2 / 10.0
Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering
Steering Wheel Turns, Lock-to-Lock: 2.67
Steering Ratio: 13.73
Turning Diameter, Curb-to-Curb (ft.): 35.4
Power-Assisted Ventilated Front Disc/Rear Drum Brakes (in., front/rear): 10.3 / 7.9
Curb weight is only up 80lbs overall on average. My LX Sedan weighs 2685lbs, it's no CRX... but it's not supposed to be.
Ya it's a completely new car with a completely new engine and standard safety features, but why stay in the past? I also happen to think the engine will do really well in the aftermarket even if I don't really care about it.
and btw... 5 lug is a GOOD thing

well, compare 2000 altima with 2005 altima then. It was a total class change.

I really just wanted to defend my now non-late model car with a biased rant. I'm sure 8th gen is perfectly cool. Except maybe the drive by wire system. That seems really odd.

the drive by wire throttle is what makes it possible to reduce pumping losses which = more power and more fuel economy
