lost keys! wtf!

So last night I was at my buddys place (which is located right beside a school) and we were having a game of basketball so I took my keys outta my pocket and set them on the ground against the wall, than went back to my buddys place, after a few hours I went to go home but realized my keys were still at the school, So im shitting myself thinking someone found them and stole my car which was parked in the parking lot right beside the school but luckily my car was still there but my keys were nowhere to be found and there were smahed beer bottles where they were. So i got a spare set but my keys also had my work ID wich has my name and picture and where I work so I'm pretty paranoid knowing someone has my keys and know all this info about me. What should I do? change my locks? forget about it? help!

hopefully you have an alarm at least so it won't be as easy to just open the door and start the car.

try to get a club steering wheel so it would scare off the theive from stealing your car a little. even the clutch club as well. if you have a car cover, use it.

tomorrow morning, check the lost and found. if if hasnt been reported to the schools lost and found, ask the dean/principal/supervisor if you can post up signs for lost keys. and offer rewards if you'd like. but to be safe, i would say "REWARD: LOST KEYS FOR HONDA ELEMENT" or something. that way, in case whoever took it wont be looking for a civic around town.

goodluck.
keep an eye out on your car once in awhile.

thanks man, ya think i'll do that, good idea about the honda element. I'm thinking I might get an alarm just to be safe...But would an alarm do anything if they can already unlock my car with the remote thing on my keys?

if you have an alarm they disable your stock security, so the stock remotes = useless. and if they open the door with the key the alarm WILL go off.

my alarm wont go off if you unlock the door with the alarm set, but as soon as you open it, it goes off.

NO! My stock remotes still work, even with my aftermarket alarm installed. Two different brains... The stock is run off the EMS, the aftermarket is run off the new brain.

oh... but if they open the doors after unlocking with the stock alarm, the aftermarket is still armed... and will set off the alarm once the door is opened.

well does the aftermarket alarm one has engine kill?
I know my alarm has it. Even if u have the key, you have to disarm the car b4 trying to start it.

I would get an alarm with a fuel pump cut off, or some type of engine kill. Cause then the alarm needs to be deactivated to run the car.

First thing to do is simple... REPROGRAM THE REMOTES

http://www.obd-codes.com/howto/reprogramremotes.php

Next thing to do may cost you a some money.

Change the locks in the car doors and ignition. This way the remote and key they have won't work, even if they already know what you car looks like and happen to have your current home and work addresses. Hopefully you didn't have house keys with these keys. If so, time to change the locks at home too.

And no, not everyone would have taken the car that day, some wait for weeks to take you car. Buddy had a new BMW, lost his keys, car, house, storage, with address to storage unit and password to storage unit. Had the stolen 2 weeks later, but it was recovered with lojack, his stroage unit emptied three months later. Only a few things were recovered from pawn shops.

Yeah but are your house keys also with that set of keys? And does not take much to find a current address if you have the license plate number, and they would have to worry about not finding you in the phone book. Think about it. You find a set of keys with a remote keyless entry. It's late in the afternoon and there are maybe 6 cars in the lot and 8 to 12 guys playing b-ball or just hanging around, you wait to see who leaves in what car ... Poof all the guys leave, there is only one or two cars in the lot and the remote makes car #2's lights flash. Which car belongs to that set of keys?

Would not matter if there were 2000+ cars in the parking lot. All they would need to do is cruise the parking lot pressing the lock/unlock button, watching for flashing parking lights, if they were up to no good. And as far as you know, they may have already done that while it was parked at the school to see which car parked there flashed. So what the others have been saying about getting a second alarm system that does not disarm, with the current key and keyless entry would be your BEST bet.

If it was me, I would be changing locks at home as well. Why? Because it's pretty easy to a check with the DMV to get a current address is not that hard to do. Because as far as you know, they may have already checked out the car, to see if it had a nice system in it, and want to find out what you might have at home as well. That's why I always have my other keys seperate from my car keys. Yes it's a pain, but if you lose the car keys, you just use your spare.

Hopefully the person that found the keys is a good egg and turns them in or at least tries to contact you at work.

hey you could have the key reprogrammed also. i agree with blkbear, reprogram the remotes for the lock/unlock at the dealership, but also you can get the immobilizer key reprogrammed. so go to the dealership and explain what happened and tell them to reprogram it. the car won't start unless its that specific key with that specific code to it.change it up and don't worry about it
