hp is what your engine puts out

whp is how much of that power actually makes it to the wheels (i.e. what you are actually putting to use)

hp will always be higher because you lose I think like 20-30% (depending upon the car) from when the engine makes it, to when it gets to the wheels

for example...

a 7thgen civic ex stock makes 127hp...in actuallity (sp?) it puts about 100whp (I think) to the wheels

edit: by the way... hp=horsepower whp=wheel horsepower just in case you didnt know

another point, the power is lost through the transmission.

flywheel horsepower is the amount of power an engine makes at the flywheel. This is typically the number manufacturers advirtise.

However an engine by itself isn't going anywhere. It needs tires, brakes, rims, axels, and a transimission to get around town. All of these parts spin, and it takes power to spin these parts. So a portion of the engines power is used to spin these other parts. Soooo by the time your finally getting power to the wheels, you will have lost a fraction of your engines power.

But you can reduce the amount power lost in the drivetrain. By getting average sized lightweight rims it takes less power to spin them so more power gets put to the ground. For FWD cars lighter rims and brakes are about the only thing you can do. But for RWD and AWD cars you can get lightweight driveshafts as well. Automatic transmissions also eat up alot of power.

Heres a general overview

FWD manual - 12% loss
RWD manual - 15% loss
FWD auto - 17% loss
RWD auto - 20% loss
AWD manual - 22% loss
AWD auto - 27% loss

just an FYI also. you can never say it's going to be exactly a certain percentage. he's giving you a general idea.

and in fact, it's not even the same percentage with the same car. it's dependent on several different factors, and on different days/situations, the same car may suffer more or less power loss from the engine to the wheels.

yep

the 6th gen civic ex puts out about 100whp.
Interesting note, if you look at AEM's site you could find that the most whp we could gain from an AEM CAI in a 7th gen is 2hp. While the 6th gen gains 8hp. However in both generations, theres torque lost in most of the lower 50% rpm range

goto K&N for more gains. aem is garbage, all they do is market their name. Everything I buy from them ends up breaking or not working right.

Big Rob has a little shameless behaviour in the past
The dyno was testing whp each time, so the gain was also whp. On a side note, there has been some controversy as to whether or not aem's dynos are accurate. I however don't really care if they are or if they aren't. I have an aem v2 and I couldn't be happier. It sound like I have a monster under the hood.

2whp peak gain at 6250 rpm. so for about $320. or i guess you could loose some weight or those out some stuff from the trunk to get similar performance gains. hahaha
