I laughed at the peoples responses... I dont even know why. They feel they are the victims of the world because they drive slow, prissy looking cars.

Mmm, they welded together 2 of those 3 cylinder engines to stuff into that Smart roadster.
Unfortunately, if I'm not mistaken, due to falling profits, they stopped making the Roadster. The Brabus version was -obscenely- priced anyways.

I don't understand why though. They're pretty popular in Europe and here, where I live (read: Edmonton, Canada) where one finds a pretty intense winter for half the year, theres a waiting list at the local Mercedes dealership up to about 50 people, all waiting for Smart cars. I think, largely, its the cost, assembled in France, the euro is doing a bit too well for itself, those 2 factors mean that it costs a bit more than it ought to.
Maybe it was the robot made out of mini's, oh no he's come to North America! http://www.r50rd.co.uk/research/internal/v2i/engin/

The smart line has never made a profit for Mercedes. I dont think there really price high to be make a decent amount of profit. They suffered huge losses in restructing, to try to make the brand profitable. Mercedes has been adament about selling cars more to main stream buyers, through the acquistion of chysler and smart, but honestly i think they suck at it. There a lot better at building luxury cars and managing that then economy cars.
It hasn't really been as apparent until now because the profits from the Mercedes luxury line subsidized the losses from smart and chysler. Except last quarter, Mercedes sales haven't been so steller since they've been having quality issues with there cars and have to pay the repair costs. *Mental note, if you build your cars in brazil then you will have quality issues* Chysler did a ok job, but didn't make much as profit as they expected.

Mercedes is losing market share at present though. At their last stockholder meeting (which, by law includes all stockholders, the definition of a stockholder being more or less anybody who owns a share, each of which is allowed something like 2mins, by law, to address the board) the entire board was more or less berated for hours on end for the problems the company is having.
In truth, Chrysler has been a better performing unit the last quarter at least anyways, good market share with that damnable 300C. Building in Brazil is a bad idea, hell, building anywhere that isn't Germany (sometimes), Canada, Japan or sometimes South Korea is a bad idea. As most cars built in Mexico (a la VW), the US (a la GM) or Germany (a la Audi and sometimes BMW) seem to be having more than their share of quality problems, too many people cutting corners nowadays.
The market share that Mercedes is losing to BMW and Japanese firms like Lexus gets bigger almost every quarter. They need to start turning their sh*t around and turning it around fast.
I always found it odd, like I said, that Smart never made money, when I was in Europe (at least in Greece) there seemed to be quite a few of the things around. I'll never understand why they don't sell that well in the US market, the idea of a 'city car' is just something people over here need in the face of whats happening to fuel prices of late.
