Squeaking Noise

My friend's 1989 volvo is having problems. The car makes a high pitched squeeking sound when the car is driven. When the transmission is at park, there is no squeaking noise. However, when the transmission is put into reverse or drive, the car makes a loud squeaking noise. The car is in the college campus now and far away from home. SO, is there any way it can be fixed? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I heard that soap would eliminate the squeaking, so my friend and I ran the motor and put a bar soap against the belt for 20 seconds. But, the squeaking can still be heard. BTW, it's so embarrassing driving a squeeking car in the parking lot. I'm glad our civics don't do this to us. ahahaha.
