Rep Power: 375 why it is good to redline/push your car every so often
Redlining or pushing your engine every so often is actually good for it. A byproduct of the combustion that occurs in your cylinders is carbon. After a while this carbon can build up on cylinder walls and other parts. If you never accelerate quickly, and never push your car, the carbon will continue to build up, and eventually could cause problems. Even to an extent of engine damage, such as unseating the piston rings. (this actually is a somewhat common thing on the northstar engines, and there is a TSB for it)
When you push/redline the car, this helps clear out those carbon deposits and remove the buildup inside the cylinder chamber.

Rep Power: 0 Just remember that Honda specifically designed VTEC engines to be redlined. There are no ill-effects to redlining VTEC engines so long as you don't go past the redline.

Rep Power: 375 lol well there is a rev limiter to protect you from going over your redline.
however if you do a mechanical over-rev (ie put it into 2nd at 80mph) you're pretty much screwed.

Rep Power: 0 Right about the rev limiter...but you are retarded if you take your care to that point. Your horsepower often drops or levels off about 500 rpms from redline so you are better off shifting beforehand. Best thing to do is have your car dyno'd and determine your shift points based on the horsepower / torque peaks.

Rep Power: 787 That's strange. I've floored my auto and actually had to let off because it looked like it was gonna keep going after 6500rpms. But ya you need to floor the car every so often so the vtec machinery can turn on. Normal driving (under 100% throttle) won't do it.

Rep Power: 0 Back off at 6500 rpms...why? You aren't at redline...

Rep Power: 0 DO NOT REDLINE ALOT!!!.......Simply going down the highway and accelerating to 100 mph exercise the process just as effectively. Redlining on a daily basis is bad. Do it if you wish but I strongly suggest against it.

Rep Power: 0 What are your qualifications that substantiate your statement? I used to work for Honda and I have owned over 10 of them. I can tell you that redlining VTEC engines is not harmful.

Rep Power: 787 where is redline on our cars exactly cause the red part on my cluster isn't visible at night. So I just let off when it's going past the blue part. I was thinking 6800.
Oh the only thing that might happen is too much redline and you'll need a valve adjustment sooner.

Rep Power: 0 I don't have an '01-04 Civic Ex so I can't tell ya for sure. But, thinking back to some of the Civic Ex's I had, the redline was over 7K. I have an '04 LX and the redline is 6800 so the redline on the EX has got to be higher.

Rep Power: 0 That is strange. My understanding is that VTEC engines are supposed to redline higher than non-VTEC engines.
