why it is good to redline/push your car every so often

Oh poop. Well I kinda knew this all along. I guess it's time to stop doing that... but anyways, anybody have a technical explanation as to WHY neutral revving is bad as apposed to having it in gear? Exactly what parts am I damaging when I do this--I mean when I did this--I mean--when someone else did this--in the past--before--I don't anymore!!!
