i have an 03 with 20k miles and my oil level doesnt move that much between oil changes. But given that your car has a lot of miles, the oil consumption could be normal.

A quart in 1500 would worry me. If you bought it used, I'd get the compression checked and see if maybe a ring went bad or something. It shouldn't be doing that.
I take it you've already looked around for leaks?

I have to add a little oil prolly once in between oil changes, but a whole quart in 1500 miles seems like a lot to me. I'd check the plugs...

It's likely an exterior leak (you'd see that), worn rings, or worn valve seals. Try a slightly thicker oil.

If he drives it hard as hell all the time then it could be normal, but I doubt it. A whole quart every 1,500 miles is a lot of oil for our engines... If he chooses to go with a slightly thicker oil I wouldnt go with anything heavier than 5w-30. If it turns out to be an exterior leak it would be easy to tell unless somebody didnt tighten the the oil filter good enough. That happened once to me.

Seems a bit much. I'd check with the techs at a dealership and see what they say. Some cars such as BMW's consume about that much oil, and are still well within spec. You could still be within reasonable limits even with a quart every 1500 miles. Having said that, I've never known a Honda engine to burn a single drop, even with high mileage. If I was you I would get it checked out.

Everything you said right there seems VERY logical however, I disagree with your belief that no normal honda engine that you've ever heard of has ever burned oil. I've heard of hondas burning a lil oil...I've been hearing that for a while...

Also, I believe that if you check the owners manual, honda recommends that the oil level in your car be checked every time you fill up with gas. I believe there is a reason for this recommendation other than "just playing it safe".

Some people like myself like to keep it topped off which is why I say I have to add a lil oil maybe once between every oil change. Everyones oil consumption is going to vary depending on their driving habbits as well I think. I drive my car hard as fvck probably more than a 1/3 of the time and thats not including the use of my bottle occasionally.

I would heed Boilermaker1 advice, compression check and leak check is a very good place to start. My K20A3 in my 03 Si used about a quart of oil in the first 5,000 miles when it was new, but it stopped after the second oil change.

i am a tech at ford so i keep up on my maintenance.it did it once before and scared the **** out of me cuz the check engine light came on and it woulndnt go past 4000 rpm. turns out it was the vtec not getting oil. since then ive checked up on it constantly and that was only 5000 miles ago. i compression checked it over the summer and everything was fine. it has no leaks (that was the first thing i checked). if its internal im just gonna take a hit between what i owe and what i gat and get rid of it. i just hope it lasts til my hearing against honda in march.

On heavily tracked cars, you'll see people overfill the oil by as much as a quart, not because the car is burning it, but because the VTEC system tends to consume a little and it becomes very irritated when there isn't enough for it. That and the design of the oil pan can sometimes pull the oil off the pickup in hard left hand turns (K-series its probably right handers).

that doesnt help him. and besides you're either really easy on your car all time when you drive it or you arent paying close enough attention to notice the difference in your oil levels when checking your oil level. I think all hondas use a little oil, even if its just a little.

See if its leaking from the crush washer that is supposed to be around the drain plug. If your getting a little blue smoke from the tailpipe it could be a head gasket or ring problem. Maybe spark plug grommets. Do a close inspection and look for oil anywhere on the engine. Let us know what you find out.

the bottom of the car is dry. completely dry.i havent noticed any smoke and it doesnt smell like oil burning. thats the whole problem. i know what to look for, im just not finding anything.i havent really been beating on it besides occasionally taching out first to chirp second. the only place i havent checked out really well is the coolant. but i think i would notice that much oil if it was in the coolant.

^^You checked all the plugs and nothing looks out of the ordinary there? If any look brown at all compared to the others that could be a sign.

Oh and you dont necessarily have to see any smoke to have oil burning.
