Does AWD = no fold down seats?

My friend has an 05 WRX and the rear seats don't fold down.

He says his friend has some other AWD car (VW 4motion or something) and it also doesn't have fold down seats, but he said the non-AWD version of it does have fold down seats.

Why is this? Does part of the AWD mechanism take up space or something that prevents you from having fold down rear seats?

Have you seen how our rear seats fold down?
There really isn't an excuse for it.

Unless the reat seats are bolted in place to provide some sort of structural support due to the AWD...but if that was the case, think about how weak the chassis must be.

if AWD=no fold rear seat then RWD should mean the same.

Maybe the rear on those cars is really stiff, They are sporty cars. WRX, EVO. Its like when you buy a type R it comes with a strut tower brace in the rear.

Check to see if the seats fold down on a 2.5 forester, something more family oriented.

look at the trunk....inside of the trunk of a WRX and you'll see why they don't fold down. Also...look for brake lines, water, fuel or any types of pressurized line under a WRX and you won't see any....I'll keep you guessing about that too.......

I can't imagine why the seats wouldn't ofld forward and sandwich on top of each other like in our Civics. As for AWD cars, I don't imagine that something like a center differential or fuel lines would make a difference?

Some cars have it and some don't. And other cars have it as an option for like an extra 100 bucks or something

Haha, the drivetrain has nothing to do with fold down seats. Body rigidity does. Cars with sportier suspension usually keep that part firm for better handling.

My '03 Evo 8 didn't have rear seats that fold down either. but it has nothing to do with awd. rigidity maybe. but if they wanted to make it rigid enough and still have folding seats ..... it's not like that impossible.

Yeah my friend's 05 WRX has a passthrough. I only use my fold down seats when I move big boxes, like when I get furniture at IKEA or something.
