My friend has a '97 Jetta... POS for sure. Everything from the speedometer to the door lock has given out (the door lock popped out when he wen to unlock it, which resulted in me cracking up). Then all the moldings fell off and for the life of him, he can't get them to stay glued on. He just says, oh well it has 100k, that's normal.... i say, **** that, it's a piece of ****. Any other car like a Honda or Nissan will get 200k before anything unexpected an major will happen. Especially if you take good care of them.
*Edit*
I forgot to mention!!! We were driving through LA, and the transmission literally dropped out of the chassis, and dragged on the ground about 40 feet. ****ing funny ****, and I still laugh at him.

I was reading some of the complaints... and wow...
VW should change their name from the "people's car" to "rich people's car" because they have moved their product so far up that their most affordable product is well above most other companies' and all the parts that they need to fix when they break are so damn expensive.

I personally think VW make greats cars. My civic has more problems than my boys 94 jetta and he got 150,000 miles. just my two cents..
My next car might be VW.. I dont trust honda that much anymore.

My dad owned a JettaIII that he bought when he worked for a volkswagon dealership and it went to hell. Engine/Transmission problems and the paint is fading on just about every body panel. He ended up selling it for like $500 just to get rid of it. He now works for a Honda/Acura dealership and owns a TSX, no problems so far and he loves it.

The new 20th anniversary golf and gli jetta seem to have quite enough power to hand hondas theyre *** as well as forged internals stock
. Chip, exhaust, intake your looking at about low 14's in a jetta and maybe high 13's for a gti. And without a doubt the VR6 is the best sounding engine imo. Don't think i'm a vw lover but props are due.

I have her convinced to trade it for a diesel powered one
40-50mpg... mmmmm
yea im glad i got rid of my golf before i got my civic.
I mostly had electrical problems with the dashboard lights and the car alarm starting after i drove in the rain.
the main bugger was that the door locks wouldnt work when it got really cold outside. I had to leave my doors unlocked when it went -10 degrees outside.

my friends 01 jetta has had a few problems, but hasnt been to bad.....worst was when he first got it...its a wolfsburg edition 1.8t so it was shipped here aparently, and the rear axle was bent...so bad the rear wheels were literally like this / \ . then a few months later, his driver side seat heater bit the dust.
other than that..the only problem he has ever had was when we installed a larger turbo/front mount, downpipe, and some other goodies, getting new hoses/lines/connectors...etc, was a bitch cause they either didnt have them or didnt know what we were talking about, or gave us the wrong parts.

^nah it isnt too bad...i actually really like it. i drove it 2 hours out to ohio to summit racing the other day to buy an exhaust for it...well he bought it, obviously...i just drove out there with him to pick it up. it rides nice, decent on gas, and best of all, 4x4, which is what he has always wanted.
and today, i took it to the cafe to meet up wiht some friends cause he took my car out for the day, and i really ran that thing through the gears....it would give my civic a run for its money...which isnt saying much, but it is quick enough to still have some fun with it.

The problems for VW started and lasted from 99-02. Thiings is starting to change from what I hear the new 2.0T is nothing to joke w/. 1.8t has always been a good engine. The one thing I'll love about mine is the torque and power available from the get go and also I have never seen a riced out VW up close. As honda has become a blunt of all jokes in terms of rice around my area.
