If not, you may want to rephrase the question.
"Luxury or low-cost fun?"
Uhmm, not all VWs are built in Mexico. The Eurovan, Passat, Toureg(Sp?) and Phaeton, and I believe the R32 are all built in Germany. But dont quote me on the R32.
VWs are da ****. Engineering is way better. And I can totally say, German engineering is at its peak! You want power? Come to the Autobahn...you want efficiency? Have some sushi.

Ask anyone who's had to change oil or a headlight bulb in a New Beetle.
I know, I'm being a smartass . . . but many German cars are overengineered to the point of absurdity.

Oh believe me, Ive had the stupidest things break on my Jetta. My rear tailights would go out like every 4 months. But, that is some serious power they are delivering. How is it overengineered?

Laurel's had to replace the headlight bulb in her mom's Beetle twice in the last couple of years. She knows exactly how it's supposed to be done, and it still takes a minimum of 20 minutes.
Compare that to changing one out in a 7th Gen. . . . like what. . . 20 seconds?
I'm not saying they're bad, just . . . . could be MUCH simpler.

the same way Porsche pack too much crap in to small of an area....
(Dont get me started with porsche...)
Yukonart; you think changing a bulb or the oil on a Beetle is hard? Try taking of one of the bumpers... see VW though it would be funny if they attached the fenders and the bumpers together, so when you need to repair a bumper, or just one of the fenders for that matter you have to remove both fenders and the bumper and then you can seperated them from eachother and do your repair....
AUDI is just as *** backwards on stuf as VW, considering they are the same company and esentially sell the same Rebadged cars. (Who designes an interior body panel thats plastic, and gives it Metal clips to attach it to the metal body..... which part is the weakest and which part is going to break first when you need to remove the body panel??? Thats right the body panel, wich is way more expensive then a few clips...
)Did you konw on the new Mercedies you cant even check your own oil? the dipstick is about an inch long.... The car will tell you when it needs an oil change.
Sorry, Venting some pent up anger regarding German overenginering. I worked at my dads Autobody shop for 14 Years (speciaizing in BMW, Mercedes and Porsche), and all I learned is that I hate all things Porsche, VWs have some of the stupidest desighned parts and asembly procedures and that no one actually owns a new mercedes, they just Rent them (Due to you no longer being able to do ANY mantinenc on them).
VW is nice in my opinion, but too much stuff goes wrong. We had a little VW thing going on here maybe 8-9 GTI's/Jetta's...everyone got rid of there cars....they all had tranny problems grinding into third....only one of my friends still has a Jetta and he traded it in for a GLI which is a completely different tranny than a normal Jetta.
ill stick with jdm.. since i only like beemers from the gdm... btw..

I prefer japanese.
A Jetta 1.8T cost a lot more than a Civic EX. If you were buy a civic and spend the difference on upgrades, it would put an 1.8T to shame. Civic coupe looks better, handles better and has better fit and finish.
German cars don't do it for me anymore.

My brother used to have a GTI...over-engineered and ***-backwards is exactly right. If it ever ran 100%, for more than five minutes, it would be great. But most people like to get to work on time so they buy bland Japanese products.

I always found VW's felt like a box with a clunky stick shift...I hated that reverse on the lower left end of the grid...stupid. All in all, it felt like a 5spd Cavalier....
Audi's are nice to cruise in but I remember racing an A9 and wondering where the hell the proclaimed power was when I dumped the clutch in it. I woulda got own3d by a bicycle off the line if it was any worse.
I pretty much got disgusted with porsche when the Cayenne and Boxter were introduced. A purist will tell you the Cayenne is the laughing stock of the porsche line and well the Boxter.....it's a poor man's porsche and I'll be a lot happier when the moron's who own them realize it.

also I would take an M3 anyday, my brother might get one within the next 2-3 days....I can't wait lol
japanese cars for me. like mentioned above, german cars are overengineered and ***-backwards. mostly in the electrical/electronics compartment. something(s) is always wrong there in german cars. i know a few people who go rid of their VWs, BMWs, MBs and Audi's because the car would never run right. yeah they have power but you'll be spending more money fixing the problems on the car that is already expensive.
Technically, BMW is NOT German... Thier Bavarian.
Anywho, German cars might be nice, or "fast", (for what you pay they BETTER down right haul-***). But Japan has nicer, faster cars that are more reliable. Just as an example: Other than straight line performance (slightly slower, but not a lot), the S2000 positively OWNS the M3. and its around $14K less...
Japanese cars are built as well as German cars. Ive looked at VW, and Audi, and I just helped work on a Boxter S the the other day, and the tolerences, and panel gap on them is not that impressive, certainly not to warrant spending that much money on a car. Vws still use solid rear axles in half of thier cars, which is rediculous. Old Deisel mercedes are the ONLY european cars I would ever own, they are simple, and run forever.
Also, to whomever stated that Japanese cars crumple on impact obviously doesnt know about "crumple zones" and the fact that cars are supposed to do that. The 7thgen civic is rated as one of the safest cars in production with an all around 5 star safety rating, you simply cant GET any safer than that.
