Skipping Gears?

- i consider myself a good manual driver but my friend who drives a 01 gsr told me to skip gears.
- is this at all possible?
- would you recommend this if racing or does it damage the car?

Well if your in 5th gear and your going like 35-40mph and you wanna race, yea, i would say you can skip 4th and go to third, or even maybe skip 3rd and 4th and go to 2nd. But if your just crusing around and you go from 1st to 5th, I think you might stall for a bit or accelerate really really slow, but hey, what do I know, I could be completely wrong, if so, somebody correct me.

The gear I most frequently skip is 4th. I accelerate hard from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and by then I'm over 70, so I just stick it into 5th.

But, it's ok to skip gears as long as it doesn't make you red-line or stall.

Racing Advice: If you have one of the VTEC engines (albeit they don't do much), you should run every gear.

Reason: VTEC. Take your car to red-line in every gear so that when you drop to the next gear, you stay in your VTEC range. If you drop out of your VTEC range (as you do by going from 1st to 3rd), then you're not putting as much power to the wheels as you could be.

If I accelerate faster in second gear, Ill drop in down to 4 just to keep the revs down and save gas a little. I dont think it'll hurt the tranny at all.

Good point, lowboy19. The only reason I skip 4th more often than 3rd is because I'm accelerating onto the Palisades Parkway (basically no onramp into a 55MPH area). But, to conserve gas, keeping the RPM's low is definitely key.
