Questions for exhaust newbie

So I am considering upgrading my exhaust but don't have a lot of money as i might flow down to indiana to see my girl. Anyways...what is exactly does a Cat-back do? And well if i get just a new muffler, will that do anything?

What should I look for in a muffler & cat-back? And what is illegal? With the cops being dumbasses in Edmonton i hear even the parking ticket guys are handing out tickets...

OH...and how much will a cat-back set me back? And how much will just a good muffler set me back?

Catback is the muffler and piping from the catalytic converter. They are usually louder that just a muffler, and can be expensive. Anywhere from $400-700. It probably won't do much on a stock car. Or you can do what I do and get a rear section. It's the muffler with piping up to the resonator. Won't be too loud, but won't really give any gains, either.

Hey edm, seriously, a rear section and SRI won't give you any noticable gain. Short of a full intake/header/catback you won't feel any more on the ol butt dyno. Even I/H/E most people don't see any kind of gain. For sound and looks it's great, but if you want real power, look at getting some engine work done. That's my opinion.

BTW I have a CAI and axle back, getting a catback within a couple of weeks....

Hey dude I was new here to once and I did just that just a muffler and it not too loud at all and you keep really good compression in the exhaust ( that a good thing ) too big you actually loose flow cuz it can't keep the flow constant. any ways go the HOW it works web site and read about exhaust gazes you'll learn lot's about what YOU need and want out of you car then go to Vtec temple and there more there for ya. trust me do a good search you'll feel much better after you know what youre trying to deal with. oh ya TAKE YOUR TIME at diciding the right exhaust and option on how to mount it. if you want it angel straight close to the bumper as low as can go , stick out lil ,hidden style whatever just take your time.
