ok here is an idea then...buy a 70's dodge dart with the 6 cyl in it. drop that but motor mounts from shumaker sp? and drop in a 440. it's been done and you have gobbs of power and a lot of guys have done it and there is a website of guys that have done it... i think it's bigblockdart.com just serch around. the car will be around 500 and u can piece together a motor/tranny/rear combo for like 2 or 3 g's and hit 12'2 pretty easily. only thing is it's going to cost more if u want to handle cause that car will handle like a pos. just an idea

dude no offense but you dont give us much to work with.
$500 can buy you the Eclipse your talking about and a few others. You just gotta look hard enough. But your not gonna find anything spectacular. Now I do agree that you stated how much you were willing to spend and cars should have been kept in that price range.
BTW ive seen Civic Hatch's go 4 as lil as $500...you gotta search.
If not just get the Eclipse

patoman-
i looked into darts actually, its a good idea but if i were to go that way id go with a chevy nova. cheaper to build engine/tranny and i like how it looks more.

the 74 DeTomaso is in there just for fun, as a lot of people out ran that car. The owners werent pushing it and with good reason.... if you brake any thing you may not beable to replace it..

If you dont know what a Pantera is ..... heres a pick.

sure you will...

Higher powerd cars take a whole lot more skill to push around the track. You have to have exceptional Throttle control. Funny to whatch the new guys push corvettes around the track, amazing to watch the veterans.

also, those were just the first ones I could find, there were others (many with better drivers and bettter preped cars).

240sx are amazing autocross and drag cars. Also my personal favort are those guys that really know how to work on cars and import R32 Skyline GTR's. The R32 is cheap to import for racing purposes and its an excellently balanced car.
However I would stick with the 240sx above anything else
for 15 grand you can have a autocross 400hp+ racecar, it is possible, hell slide in some custom paint you probally get a 240sx all around performer and showcar for under 20k. I am talking about a super clean showcar that can drift like a mother

about the U.S drift not to sway offtopic but I seen a crownvic own a 240sx in drift comp. Its all driver skill! car just adds a little edge to a driver

240 would be a good car, but you may want to look at the old Z cars (240Z 260Z 280Z) all good performers and if you get an old enough one you can drop a V8 in it and still be street legal.

about drifting... Cool to learn and watch but as a pro event.... well Because its a Judged event rather then a timed event, Drifting has as much in common with figure skateing as it does with road racing.
