Which car?
So, I have a 2002 Coupe at 22,000 KM (yep, I'm in Canada).
I'm looking to trade it in for either a 2002 Hatchback (SIR) at 40-50,000 KM, or 2000 SIR at 60-80,000KM, or a 2002 Sentra SE-R Spec-V at 50,000 KM.
What would you do?
I had thought about this long and hard, and I don't think keeping the 7thgencivic is any use after all... because for $2000 more, I can get the hatchback, which has better engine, better suspension, better interior stuff (yeah, i like them suede things), and I can still get it under warranty!
OR, I can go for a 2000 SIR, which will be $2000 cheaper and without warranty, higher mileage, but then still all the good suspension and everything else.
OR, I can go for a 2002 Sentra SE-R SpecV for a similar price as the 2000 SIR... 175HP/185torque, 6-spd, blah blah blah...
What would you do?? And I'm not talking about the styling... it's not a factor at all... I'm thinking about insurance, about maintenance cost, about aftermarket parts availability, about reliability... not so much worried about resale value because I think I'll keep the car for more than 5 years and it'll probably be worth crap anyways...
I'm leaning towards the Sentra, because it's got 4-doors (good for small family), it's got tons of torque (good for hauling groceries and family), it's got a solid stock suspension system (unlike my blown struts in the civic), and it's probably cheaper than SIR in terms of insurance.
Whew that was a long winded question eh!? Thanks a bunch for your input!

None of the above. Especially because you live in the great white land of ice & snow.
A low mile ~2002 Subaru 2.5 RS can be had (fully loaded) for about 15 large (US funds).
You could also spend (much) less if you go for a GC-8 (2001 model).
Over the 2, unless warenty is a big issue, id get the cheaper 01 model.
Its lighter, faster and corners better.. plus looks better to boot (imo). Not only does it have everything you like about the SpecfiVe Nissan (4 doors, large torquey engine) but it’s got ALL WHEEL DRIVE, and responds to mods more so then any of the 3 previously mentioned cars. Im also willing to bet the insurance will be lower as well VS the Nissan or Hondas you mentioned.
...or you can just go with the pop-rice selections, its your dollar (or .02 cents if you convert that to Canuck "money").

This is all in Canadian funds of course:
starting price is $15,900, for OVER 110,000 KM!!!!! That's freakin' NUTS!!!!
and then they just get more expensive and more expensive... i think people just don't buy enough of those... i'm sure they're well-built and have good quality... but damn, that's not something i can shell out...

i suppose prices are very different where you live... then again id think AWD cars would be at a premium there. and again, this is a price quoted for a 2001 model? i found a 30k mile 2002 w/ everything for 15,100 US. How much can YOU spend?
Mazdaspeed baby...
But seriously I'd get the Spec out of the cars you listed. FWD car that comes stock with an LSD sounds good to me. Honda doesn't put an LSD on the Civic Si(R). If you can get your hands on a used WRX go for it, but I wouldn't touch the 2.5 RS unless you plan on doing your own custom turbo setup...But in the end, why not get it with a turbo already on there, with a remaining factory warranty (provided it's not voided or expired)

edt: yes, the mazdaspeed would kick ***.
Just not my preference. I would rather have an AWD turbo covered under warranty than something I'd have to really mess with. Modding is fun, but if you can have peace of mind, then that's better.
you could get either the spec v, a gsr ( like me when i traded in my vic), or a used si.
out of al that i prefer the gsr, not only cus i have it, but becus, you leather interior, a 1.8l dohc pushing 170, and its a coupe, so the ladies will always enjoy. and it does have about 8 years worth of aftermarket support, those eight years are alot beter than 4 or even 5 with the si and spec v

you're right
I bought a 2002 Civic SiR... the hatch is awesome. Good stock suspension, decent engine... I'm kinda used to the power by now, so I'm starting to crave for more, but still, decent. Awesome interior, and roomy too! (i'm 260lbs)
Fold down the back seats, and you can see how hatch is really great for moving "small" things, like, if I bought a big TV, I can still fit it in the back! It's pretty nice.
Spec V turned out to be too expensive, and GS-R would be kinda lousy on insurance, plus it's a bit too crampped inside, hard to fit 4 people in that little thing. 2.5RS was just way out of my price range, and on top, I like the possibility that one day I *can* put a K20A2 in the hatch and make some noise...
Thanks for all the feedback though!
