break in period
break in period
i just hit 100 miles on my '04 civic.
i know the break-in period ends at 600 miles, and ive been driving conservatively ever since i got my car. but when starting the car and shifting into drive after school today, i accidentally stepped on my gas instead of brake, revving the engine to 4.5k RPM. my friend distracted me
anways, this one time thing isnt gonna hurt the car is it? ive heard rumors of if you drive the car too hard or rev the car to high within 150 miles of usage, itll deposit little flakes of metal into the cylinders.
am i screwed? i might be a bit paranoid.... FIRST car EVER

your fine... some experts recommend running it hard once in awhile during the break-in period...
i dunno tho, i read all these different ways of breaking-in a car on this one site long long ago...
your ok though.. nothing to worry about

when I bought my car, first I test drove it, and the dealer guy told me to punch it so I did. I shifted at 7 grand, and the car had only 20 miles on it. I didn't get that car though. That was an LX and I wanted moon roof...sooo...yeah, you'll be fine...
My sister let her friend drive her brand new '03 Accord V6 MT. He totally missed the gear and was in neutral and jammed on the gas to about 6500 rpm.. redline is below 7000 (i think) and the car had less than 120 kms on it. I was screaming inside when i heard the engine rev that high and the needle jump up to that area of the tach.
youll be fine. but technically the break in doesnt end till your first oil change, at 3750....but its just not as big of a deal after 600... more info on breaking in

You don't really need to do much engine breaking in. They're designed to run. They put the redline there for a reason. You do need to get the rings to wear into the cylinder walls, but revving it up a little doesn't have much effect on that. I think I let it go about 2000 miles before I redlined it, but I know for sure 4500 was done on several occasions before that. Thats like smack in the middle of the powerband... therefore the engine doesn't care.... it probably appreciates it. You more need to just break in the clutch, the brakes, all the systems in the car, and they tell you to go easy on it just in case there's a defect, and so you give stuff like the clutch and the brake pads time to set in. Thats really it. The engine is pretty much ready to go when you get it.
motor break in, i believe, is fairly important. i give my motors 2000 miles as tough as it is to do so. everything needs to seat and find it's place. but that rev to 4500 shouldn't hurt it. more damage is caused by heavy loading during break in.
At less than 200 miles on the odometer, I had to do a panic stop on the freeway then my non-ABS brakes locked up and all these tire smoke came out from the front. Ever since that, I think that all the systems on my car are performing more roughly(engine, trans, brakes). Maybe I was just paranoid.
I asked about this when I picked my '03 up at the dealer three weeks ago. The dealer said they used to tell you to maintain a break-in period but Honda did not require one anymore. He even took me out to the service counter and I asked one of their techs about it, and got the same answer.
There's break-in oil in the engine from the factory and you should not change that oil for 5000 miles. Other than that, have fun. I wouldn't take that as approval to go red-lining it everywhere or towing trailers full of bricks, but I'm not babying it either.
Best to all,
Pol
