97 Honda Civic (auto)

I've got a 97 Honda Civic LX. It has an automatic transmission and is bone stock. My question is about the engine RPM's at highway speed. The car is running about 3100 RPM at 70mph. That seems kind of high to me. Not sure if that's normal or not. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is that just a honda thing? My Subaru only runs around 2600 RPM's at 70mph.

Re: 97 Honda Civic (auto)

small engine that works best at higher RPM usually have shorter gearing, sound like normal to me.
they are actually more efficient that way

Re: 97 Honda Civic (auto)

Your Subaru also has a larger displacement and is very likely turbocharged. Those lend more towards lower gearing.

Re: 97 Honda Civic (auto)

My Subaru is just an old Forester, definitely not turbo charged. It does 0-60 in about 2 minutes lol.

Re: 97 Honda Civic (auto)

well, there is the impact from the lower gearing...
civics of that age are likely better at acceleration since they lighter and shorter gearing (A passenger will impact acceleration, though)
my 02 civic is larger and heavier than a 97 but can still pull its 40MPG and it have even shorter gearing (EX)
