How would I be sure that a seller hasn’t cleared OBD codes?
How would I be sure that a seller hasn’t cleared OBD codes?
Hi, I’m buying my first 6th gen possibly this week. It’s really gonna be my first used car purchase as well so idk how that all goes. A few questions.
1. How do I make sure the car isn’t stolen?
2. How do I make sure the guy isn’t trying to pass of a faulty car by clearing OBD codes?
3. There’s no maintenance history on the car(1999 DX) and it’s sitting at 173k for $2,800. It’s in fair condition what would be a fair price to pay?
4. How do I get it inspected before I buy? Do I just schedule an appointment with a mechanic?
5. Do I get a CarFax? Is it instant?
6. Any tips in general?
7. I know with a 2002 accord you can jump the OBD pins and the dashboard CEL will flash a sequence to indicate OBD codes is there anything similar for a 99 civic?
Thanks in advance.

1. Police station, registry, etc
2. Take it for a decent test drive. They should emerge
3. No more than $2000 IMO. Would need pictures to be certain. Prices also fluctuate greatly based on location so hard to make a fair estimate
4. Yes.
5. You get it right as your method of payment approves
6. Ask about maintenance i.e timing belt, fluids, check condition of tires, leaks, etc. Check for black sludge in the exhaust, which may indicate that it's burning oil
7. Not that I'm aware of, but I've never owned a 6th gen. A mechanic should also be able to bring up wiped codes.
Is it manual or automatic? Sedan or coupe? This has a rather large effect on pricing.
If there's an ad, feel free to post it. Feel free to ask any further questions that may arise.

If you plug in a scanner and any of the systems are "not ready" that is a sign that the codes have been cleared recently

Thanks for all the info. Here’s the car in question. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...5033238513342/

$2800 for a 99 DX seems pretty high to me, maybe $1500 to $2000 if its in great condition.
I have an '08 EX Coupe in good running condition with 125k miles and I figure its worth $2500 maybe $3000 on a good day.. Had an '01 EX Coupe with 140K I traded in for a '12 and I only was able to get $2500 and that was in '12.
Drive it hard first, make sure AC is in good working order, then if you still like it go to a mechanic and ask them to check it out (they will likely charge a nominal fee).

Re: How would I be sure that a seller hasn’t cleared OBD codes?
If the monitors aren’t ready then the codes have been cleared. My scan tool will also tell me the date the codes were last reset.
prices vary. I see a lot posted near me generally between $2000-3500. I just picked up mine for $400 but it comes with many issues that I will be doing the repairs. Probably around $1,000 in parts needed.
