Today I almost finished my CAI... I am yet to cut some clear plexi glass and contain the air filter to cold air only-as now it gets some engine heat, and cold air.
The throttle body is an Omni 70mm throttle body-which requires IAC relocation.
The Intake manifold has been ported to match the 70mm t.b.

Since upgrade, ran against a nissan 240sx and a svt ford focus hatch. Tie rolls from 20mph and 50mph with the focus, but he had tipped out from a dig. The 240 was close side by side through my low auto gears but at higher speeds the 240 slowly walked my civic. I have future plans of boosting, just saving up and shopping for a while now possibly upgrading other little things in the mean time.
For the IAC valve relocation, I made a custom fitting plate and hooked it up to the stock coolant lines.

As far as the material, I'm still not settled with what I will use...(thin metal/home drain gutter stuff recomendation from someone on another forum as well) I understand that it may not be enough to worry about but the type of material I use whether its metal (a strong conductor of heat), or plastic(less conductive).

Thankyou!

My buddy bought a cheap aluminium cooking pot from a dollar store, snapped the handle off, drilled a hole in the bottom and fitted it to the end of his intake pipe. Much thicker than the traditional heat shield, but in theory in should hold the heat out better.

That would definitely be a big advantage if you went with a plastic heat shield.

I love it! We all would be better off with thinking "outside of the box"... INGENUITY!!!! Though our personal choices are not approved by some, we still can succeed knowing basics of how something works/functions. My first cai kit was a K+N years ago for $360... what came was a plastic intake tube, filter, and a sticker. I made a note then, I can make a CAI cheaper with pvc piping and some couplings... taking into consideration how the K+N tube had a bigger contained area after the filter ---it provides more air ready to go in the engine quicker than just a 2.5" or 3" tube. Ofcourse depending on engine size, and forced induction-- will thin out the exact needs of amounts of air and whats just overkill.

Getting pretty much finished before the boost stuff comes... I'm going with larger plug wires, and putting a spacer between the throttle body and intake manny... Even though boost is my goal, the spacer has a port for nitrous as well. Nitrous isn't really my cup of tea, however a local guy is spraying in a little hatch and it gets pretty quick.

PVC piping intakes are actually really effective, the air flow isn't quite as smooth, but no heat soak. The $300 saved is better put towards other things.
