Cold air intake substitution

I have an 01 civic and live in cali. I want some more intake noise from my car and i know i can get a cold air intake but if i get pulled over then im done for. I was thinking instead of taking everything out and throwing in a cold air intake i could just get the stock air cleaner and hollow it out to allow more air to come in. Im not talking about the airbox with the actual filter in it im talking about the huge air box connected to it. If i hollowed it out it would allow more air to pass through and the air would still be going through the same filter and it would all still look stock from the outside. Thoughts on this idea? If nobody’s tried it i was just going to grab another box from the junkyard and try it on that one but i would rather not have to spend the money if it doesn’t work out.

Air intake substitution

I was thinking of hollowing out my stock air cleaner in my 2001 civic instead of installing a cold air intake. I live in California and dont want to have to deal with the cops. I was thinking i could hollow out the air cleaner (the big box that connects to the airbox with the filter) to allow more air to flow since the air cleaner is restricting it a bit. Since all i would be doing is making the inside of the box hollow it would still look stock from the outside. All the air would still flow through the same place and still go through the same air filter and i also dont have to worry about making my own box so the intake actually gets cold air from outside the car. Has anyone thought or tried it before? Should i be the first?

Re: Cold air intake substitution

It’d be a waste of time regardless (especially without a tune, but even with). In a stock application, even a real CAI is borderline counterproductive for these cars.
