Better ventilation to engine bay?

I am currently running a sri and obviously during the summer they are not very effective, so I was wondering you all thoughts on what would help to get the heat away from the engine. Not getting more in, just letting out. I was looking at some vents and there's a wide range, I like something like this (see link) but then if it's raining, what's gonna stop the rain from getting into my engine?

Thanks guys

Re: Better ventilation to engine bay?

IMO the amount of work that would go into putting those vents in and making them look halfway decent would not be worth it. Yes the heat is not allowin the intake to make the most power but it's not going to make a big difference with the stock hp.

Why not get a cold air intake? If you already have a Sri you could just buy a coupler and some pipe to extend it a little into the fender.

If you want to use the vents then you will have to position them somewhere so that the engine does not get wet or when the water does go in it will get directed somewhere else. They make hood props that do the same thing, might want to check them out. They are at PWJDM.

Do you just mean risers to keep the hood open a little? Technically what I have is the equivalent to an sri. I modified the stock intake so it is more like the old muscle car intake. I really am on a tight budget so I am trying to go with effective low budget fixes, not cheap redneckery just inexpensive. Do fender vents work at all or are they just for show really? I took my grill out, and I know it looks bad, but it has cooled down so much. I drove last night and it was like 68 outside and 20 miles later the fender and hood were still cold to the touch, and today 20 miles 75f outside, the hood and fender were cooler then it was outside. Thoughts?

Well,i think I found a cheap fix. Washers. I have 4 washers in between my hood bolts on the hinges.

Well the washers didn't work, apparently hood risers don't let heat out unless at a stand still. It did help with the heat lag, but it didn't seem to help lower engine temp. Would a rad flush help?

Huh? Why do you want to do this?
Are you seeing something that makes you think the engine is too hot? (Head gasket issues?)
It's supposed to be hot, because.... burning gasoline on fire and stuff.

Its operating temp (coolant) is regulated at 180-220*F.
The cat can run several hundred degrees.

There's plenty of ventilation for the engine compartment already.
The engine compartment is completely open underneath the car for air to escape. There are huge holes where the tie rods go out into the wheelwells.

If you are only trying to get your SRI breather to "inhale" cooler air, then get more tubing and move the filter to a cooler area, like GolNat said..

Or take the hood off.

(I really only posted this to make the hood comment.)

Re: Better ventilation to engine bay?

I run a PasswordJDM Carbon Fiber Power Chamber on my motor.. Makes a Huge Different Runs Cooler , 7hp Increase and you can feel it. way better take offs , Exhaust sounds better and it makes the motor look good.. I recommend this investment.

You basically ruined the design of the OEM intake, and now cannot draw any cold air into the engine. You will just suck up hot air. Muscle car filters are designed like that because the engines were carbureted, and many muscle cars had ram air hoods which supplied air directly to the filter.

Your problem is not letting out air.....its that the engine is only sucking in hot air, instead of the cooler air that the OEM intake supplied. I would either re-install the OEM intake, or just buy a cheap eBay cold air intake, and throw on a AEM Dryflow filter.

Re: Better ventilation to engine bay?

Muscle cars also had ram air hoods to help get air into the motor.

Re: Better ventilation to engine bay?

I recently was looking into this for my car and I decided I'm probably going to buy a connection to my cone filter off my short ram and run a duct off that and mount it where the stock airbox ran its intake tube to by the bumper.
