i think by "boost" you mean gains (ie: in hp and torque). boost usually means, turboing or supercharging. as everyone will say bolt ons (ie: intake, exhaust) on the d17 will do very little and for the cost don't make sense if you want performance.
if your plan is to buy new bolt on's and stop there then it's only good for sound and looks, not power and it will be expensive!
but if you are planning to build you will need those bolt on's to let the engine breath properly.
i bought used so i havn't spent much and i'd highly advise you to do the same.
my intake/exhaust system:
~k&n short ram intake (i went short cause it rains here like every day), new $320
~stock header (it matchs the exhaust ports in diameter so you don't need bigger)
~2in downpipe, not sure if it was stock.
~2.25in megnaflow cat. converter, new $100
~2.25in megnaflow cat. back exhaust system used, $150 from craigslist
~welded instalation of exhaust plus tax $170
if i was smart a would have bought an intake off ebay for $50 and a brand name filter for $30-50, then my total cost would have been $520.
not too much noticed so far for gains but the car is more responsive and seems to be better up hills and with more weight in it then before.
but the sound is amazing! and the filter looks great in my enginebay. along with the countless hours painting, removing, installing and the like.

wow looks great.. i know i wont get much more power from the little honda but i figure it will be a good starting off car. i will def start looking for parts!!
Re: intake for a 02 civic ex?? any suggestions?
thx! and ya ebay and craigslist are awesome for cheap stuff, just don't go buying a turbo or on of those resistors from ebay, lol. i also got my 17in rims from craigslist with 90% tred tires for $300!

no first off AEM material filters the air alot better then K&N and that is the purpose of a filter not just HP gains and secondly you have to oil k&n filters which can gunk up sensors if you use to much AEM is superior.
Re: intake for a 02 civic ex?? any suggestions?
i'm not sure what you mean. you mean buy a k&n intake (you typed r&n)? if so then no! get a generic intake from ebay, then buy a good filter and huck the one it comes with. most people on here like aem filters but k&n is pretty well known and hasn't given me any problems. and don't get someone to install it for you. look on the net for your car's instalation instructions then do it your self. all you need is a flat screw driver and a cheap wrench set.

Time for a stupid noob question. What's stopping a guy from placing the air filter directly on top of the throttle body? Maybe using a little bit of tubing to place an O2 sensor. I'm not afraid to cut a hole in my hood and make a cheapo fake hood scoop functional...

Theoretically nothing, but theres nothing stopping you from lighting your car on fire either.
The intake is placed at a certain area in your engine bay and the tubing gives a degree of control over the flow of air into your throttle body. If you really want to you can run with no intake, but your engine will be very loud and won't run very well since there will be very limited control over the flow of air into the engine.
Now a fake hood scoop, well theres about 200 things wrong with that.
It'll suck water in when it rains,
It will make you a ricer,
The filter will suck in dirt and garbage while you drive,
It will force to much air directly into the throttle body and through off the a/f mixture.
Something that works, looks good on a camaro, doesn't necessarily do the same thing on a civic.

arn't hood scoops usually for top mounted radiators? you could do the functional hood scoop, but make plugs for when it rains, if you want to run the scoop to the intake instead of a top mounted radiator.

On most new cars hood scoops are for top mount radiators, Imprezas for example. On older muscle cars with big V8's and carburetors they were totally functional, thats a much less complex intake system then the one a civic though.

Some of the newer cars comes with variable intake - longer path for lower RPM, shorter for higher RPM.That short an intake will likely reduce a lot the torque in lower RPM's, which is already not much. S2k can live with it because of the 6 gears that allows for the good driver to keep the engine in the right range of RPM, but means much more gear shifting. (old school knowledge
).
That was the reason i put a CAI instead of SRI, but now i keep needing to dodge water pudlles in the right side

Youre absolutely right putting a scoop on my rock stock 01 will make me a ricer. I'm okay with that I've been chatting with some of the techs in my shop about MAF sensor placement, the concensus is that distance from the throttle body to the MAF won't be an issue, so essentially i could place my sensor pretty dang close to the TB and run my scoop. As for sucking water I can get just as much cold air from the scoop if I turn it around backwards and call it an "air induction scoop" just like the old school camaros mentioned above. Yes I agree heavy rains would be an issue, but I live in Saskatchewan, Not quite a desert but our rainfall isn't substantial. Aaaaand when all else fails run a switch to an actuator that moves air intake flow from hood to under hood. It's just an idea anyway. I'll probably just Short Ram it anyway.

The civic doesn't have a MAF sensor, it does have a air temp sensor though. You could always go the the Lowes and buy the metal heater ducting to make your cold air intake with that. It worked for me, just buy the AEM dry flow filter and after you get the shape you what just duct tape it.

Someone else made an intake out of PVC piping..
I don't get it, why would you replace the stock intake with something that looks like junk for no reason.
