clean it about ever 10-15k miles. It also varies on your driving habbits. Get K&N filter cleaner, they have instructions on the box. You basically first clean it with water to remove dirt and what not, then spray a cleaner on there, then rinse it out and then put a oil on it.

Here in Puerto Rico really have dirt air, so I clean mine every 7k miles or every 6 months (anyways, like 2 times a year).

About how to clean it... follow Streetglower instructions.

also keep in mind....after the rinsing and clensing make sure you let it dry for a long period of time too..

i think aem and K&N makes filter cleaning kits. i think their like $20?+ ppl told me you get a cup or bucket, pour the cleaning liquid into it, and dip the filter in their for a minute and remove. but sounds kinda odd. =|

I bought the K&N filter cleaning kit from Pep Boys.... it was about $15 I think. Basically, 2 spray cans. 1 spray for the cleaning liquid, and 1 is for the oil.

I'm not cleaning mine until 40-50k miles. It filters dirt better when dirty. A clean K&N is terrible at trapping dirt.

I clean mine once a year. The filter actually performs better when there is some dirt on it. <---- I'm not joking.
