Cone filter cleaning report
Cone filter cleaning report
Hey all...
Recently, I decided it was time to check my AEM CAI's cone filter and was shocked at the amount of crap that was stuck to it. One side was literally caked with mud/grease and the whole thing was pure dirt and grime.
I had wondered what the hell happened to my MPG!
So, I priced new filters since it was kinda banged up and was shocked to find that the replacement runs $75-100 USD. Then on another board I was told to just go get a cleaner kit.
Found one from K&N from PepBoys for $11 USD and last Saturday while washing/waxing I cleaned it. Very easy to use, just spray on the cleaner, let sit, rinse, repeat until clean. I did three passes and then hosed it off real nice. ONce it's air dried, you spray on the red oil to coat the filter, let it sit till its all soaked in and reinstall.
Made a definate difference in my MPG, even when AC is running and makes me feel happy to have saved my dum *** $90 instead of having bought a new one.
How often do you guys clean yours? I assume in AZ etc where its extra dusty youd do it more?

I cleaned it once and then bought a new one. Even after I cleaned it, there was still freakin dirt and what not caked in the filter, so I just bought a new one. I paid $35 shipped for my filter.
Was it a brand name or a generic? Has it worked well?
I had to bang the crap out of mine on the ground to get the larger stuff off, and hosed it pretty well to rinse out the rest after I degreased and soaked it several times.
I am sure there will occassionally be some seriously stubborn crud in there that just won't come out without damaging the filter itself.

Ok, sorry, it was $37 shipped. only $2 more. But it was a injen filter. For my injen CAI. And yes, since I put the new one on, I have gotten about 50 more miles out of my tank then I did before, and my car has better pickup now, and doesnt lag.

just find out what diameter filter you use, and you can pretty much use any other one. But some intake manufactures only recommend using there filter because it was designed for the intake. And using other ones cause the intake to not becdome CARB legal and what not.

I clean mine every other oil change. Aem uses a K&N filter. You should not have to replace it unless you mess it up some how.

Last time I cleaned it (2 weeks ago), there was dirt on the outside, and a little bit inside. I cleaned it, still there on the outside.... so I'm going with gearbox, and getting myself an S&B filter in a month or 2. btw, prior to my last cleaning, I cleaned it.... I think in May

K&N recommends cleaning around every 50k miles because the filter works like crap when new. I'm ordering a new S&B filter for my fipk. The apexi one is also excellent if you get it to fit.
