Intakes

Im sure this has been covered before, but I searched and its almost impossible to find what i'm looking for because the subject is so broad, but what is the difference between Short Ram Intake and Cold Air Intake? Thanks for any help.

Short ram is under the hood and stops there. Cold air is longer and weaves all the way down to the front of the car.

So thats basically the only difference? Nothing different by how they perform?

CAI= Cold Air Flowing through= Better Performance Wise.

SRI=Better than stock. More Air Flow. But Hotter Air Flowing Through(not so good)

So performance wise go with CAI beware though don't go through any deep puddles or hydrolock will occur.

hydrolock is when water is sucked into your engine preferrably by a CAI...this water will cause your engine to stall and just die...i wouldn't know from experience though...

a CAI usually yields more horsepower gain than a SRI, but at the sacrifice of lower end power.

this is discussed in the FAQ of the site, you might want to check it out. Its on the menu on the left side of the page.

You can get a heat shield for Short Ram intakes that really seem to help prevent some of the hot air....kinda like on the FIPK2 intake youll hear about.... get it

Nice to see there is no, "Search, n00b!" on this thread so far! Good job guys! Way to help, even though this is a newbie question. We were all there once.

Cold Air Intakes do may sacrifice low end power (From taking off the cold air extension and making my intake system into a short ram I couldn't hardly tell a difference) but you are going to want to focus on top end power if you want to be racing.

cryption should not be trusted
if you get a bypass valve on a CAI you really reduce the risk of hydrolocking ... I've been owned by some puddles and never hydrolocked

^ he has. i've been with them. i running my CAI w/o a bypass valva right now and have not noticed any problems yet, but i refuse to drive during heavy rain, or through large puddles. on my spec-v i have noticed miniscule gains in the higher rpms due to the hotter climate in texas, but i did notice a loss in lower end torque.

I drive in the rain with my CAI, but I don't mash down on the gas. I don't think having a cold air without a bypass valve should scare people from driving in the rain, just be very light on the pedal.

So which should i get? Or does it really matter considering our car doesn't gain much with small modifications.

I have the injen short ram and a aem cold air intakes.
I tend to stay with the aem cold air during the summer time and only use the short ram during winter. Injen short ram is a lot louder than the aem cold air. Performance wise, I would say the aem is a better buy.

Cold Air Intakes - get colder air, which is more dense than warmer air, and therefore has more oxygen which means better performance. Unfortunately, all the bends and long piping can slow the air down. Cold air intakes also are succeptable to hydrolock.

Short Ram Intakes - get warmer air cuz they stay closer to the engine. But the air moves faster so you get more of it.

Metal intakes get very hot to the touch after a few minutes of the engine running. Most intakes are metal.

K&N makes a short intake with a heat shield to minimize warm air going in, and it's also plastic, so it doesn't heat up. After long trips it will still be cool to the touch. It's called K&N FIPK II.
