94 civic ex D16Z6 head upgrade?!?

Hi I’m pretty new to Honda’s so bare with me and try not to clown on me please. Haha

i have a 94 civic ex I bought with 99k on it! Yup that’s right only 99k.
ive put some miles on her so currently around 100,330.

just blew the head gasket and my cars at a shop. The mechanic is my co workers family mechanic and owns a shop.

my question is, are there any upgrades I can do while he is doing the head? He said he had to send the head to a machine shop to get resurfaced and he will replace the gasket.

im wondering what upgrades I can do while he is doing this job. Nothing crazy expensive like cams etc. any kind of head swap I can do? Or maybe upgrade the hardware etc? I want a little more power but also reliability.

thanks and thanks to people who actually want to help and not just make fun of this noob haha

I’d just fix it and drive. You could do springs and retainers but you’d need a camshaft in order to get the gains.

D16Z6 has one of the better D-series heads so I wouldn’t swap it unless you physically need to.

That’s what I was thinking. Should I provide the mechanics with certain hardware? What kind of head gasket kit? ARP head studs?

Let them provide the parts. They’ll warranty their stuff, not yours.

head gasket - OEM as much as possible
not sure about D16, but D17 we don't usually change headstuds (they are not designed to stretch)
do a quick search if D16 does need or not?

Just stick with factory/whatever the shop uses
