Ignition slot next to gear shift?

I need some advice, please. I know what that key slot is, and how to push it in to start my car when the gear shift locks up. What, though causes my 95 Civic to occasionally do that? What needs to be checked/done to stop it from doing that? Is it dangerous? Sure hope someone can help this 80 year old woman out, as I'm kind of clueless about these things, although just spent almost $1K for a rebuilt computer for this car to find out why it was stalling, cutting out and the check engine light was on and I just can't afford to go through that again. A little advanced knowledge would help me to not feel like I'm getting ripped off. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

The transmission range switch may be failing. Test before replacing

Colin, thanks for your reply. How would I expect to have that tested? And do you have any idea what something like that should cost? The problem has only happened once before, so twice since the last couple of years.

Thanks for your reply. Well, to be exact, $941, but to be fair, $100 was for towing 7 miles and $100 for the computer assessment. Still, more than I paid for the car.

Couple hours of labour, ask for the shop's electrical guy to diagnose it
