1995 Civic LX Automatic

It's my sons car, he says it was running fine, then all of a sudden it won't go into any gear, not even park (car acts like its in neutral in all gears). The shifter moves, and gear indicator moves on the instrument cluster, but doesn't engage transmission. Slight grind when going back into park. Tranny shot? Shift solenoid? Any help is appreciated.

Well, I got it figured out, the driver side CV axle had some how slid out of the transmission about a half inch, and sheered the last bit of teeth of of it. New CV axle and it's rolling again, but I cant figure out what would have caused it to slide out that little bit.
