1994 civic ex surging & hard starting????
Here's the symptoms: Car was running well with 205K. A new driver was repeated stalling the car while learning to use the clutch.
The car wouldn't start after one of the stalls. Then the car would only start intermittently, initially run rough then idle fairly smoothly and accelerate with a stutter at about 2000-3500rpm
no check engine lights. (Car has a newer battery, coil/ igniter, cap & rotor and main relay)
I replaced the fuel filter, & checked for & got fuel pressure. I checked for & consistently got spark.
I guessed the timing belt may have jumped a tooth under the load and jerky driving.
I checked the belt & tension seemed OK. Double checked the timing marks.
The white top dead center mark on the pulley and 3 marks on the camshaft pulley. (everything lined up OK)
I jumped the obd1 connector and checked the timing with a gun. Timing (red mark on pulley) was off initially but then settled on its own once the car warmed up a bit more.
I guessed the ecu was bad (wasn't showing any errors and setting bad timing upon start and acceleration)
I swapped in a tested used ecu with no changes in symptoms.
I'm thinking the distributor is next to swap out? (The cam position sensor is part of this unit and could be bad?)( Could the temp. sending or thermostat or cause problem?)
Any Ideas?

Got spark? (1/2 inch lightning bolts expected)
Are the spark plugs wet, or dry?
