86 Civic wagon Head Gasket issue
86 Civic wagon Head Gasket issue
I'm replacing the had gasket on my 86 wagon and the previous owner stripped one of the exhaust manifold nuts. Can I just unbolt the cat and pull the head with the header attached?
Re: 86 Civic wagon Head Gasket issue
I think you can. The 84-87 was not nearly as easy to pull the head as later models like the 88-91 1.5.
Also, these 1.3/1.5L engines have a history of going through oil like crazy after doing a head gasket unless you also do rings, valve seats etc. No reasonable explanation of why a head gasket change would make such a difference, but it does.
Good luck.
PS- You have to deal with the stripped stud anyway, so you can also just chisel/cut it off and replace it once you have the head out.
