2002 Civic EX lost it's mind....

Daughter driving home started running like crap, all sorts of dash lights on, transmission clunking and slipping.
Next morning I go out, try to start it, does but with lots of coaxing, when on engine sillouette light on, green key flashing, putting in reverse responds in a cluck as does drive with slipping. Borrowed my friends computer scanner ( MAC TOOLS EC150 ), indicates communication error. On line says to disconnect battery cables and touch them for 15 minutes or so so clear it out ( NOte here, ground was a little loose on battery connection ). Fixed battery connections started the car again with some coaxing, same thing, can not communicate with the computer.
I am thinking that maybe this ground jumping around took out the ECU ? Would all these other oddities be a result of a bad ECU like the transmission acting strangely. I have run Mobil One in it since I got it and drained the tranny fluid every 3rd oil change, it's nice and clean.....

Any help/Guidance appreciated.

Also I am reading if I get another ECU I need Honda to reprogram it for me ? How much do they screw you for that ?

sometimes a loose battery connection can cause major issues like this, since it is not able to act as a buffer for the electrical system. no communication with the ecu usually means it fried. try a couple different code scanners to be sure, but thats what it seems like to me. used ecu on ebay is $100 give or take, just be sure you get one for the same model of car you have and trans type. no idea how much dealer charges to reprogram the keys.

The ELD will have the voltage all over...12volts - 14.2 range. Important to be not below 12.

So the reprogramming of the ECU that the vendors speak of is only for the keys ? I thought it would be for fuel mixture, emissions settings etc...seems like they should come preprogrammed for your vehicle once year, tranny and VINs correlate....

Re: 2002 Civic EX lost it's mind....

its mainly so the keys can communicate with the new ecu and immobilizer. silly system for a civic that nobody would steal anyways, but its there and tied into every part of the system. at idle in park, the voltage should be right around 14v and stay there. ELD only changes the voltages while out of park and can routinely drop to around 11.5v in summer.
