1 inch in each direction is normal but any more and you could have issues. a front upper strut bar like neuspeed brand will take away some play. also broken sway bar endlinks can cause more play (if your car has swaybars front/rear).

sometimes when i turn ill turn the whell and the car will keep going stright so i have to over turn

my tie rod was about to fall off and making loud clunks but the car still turned like normal. only time i had noticable play was with bad tires and broken front sway links. how far are you turning the wheel and nothing happens?

get under tha car and pry stuff around to see if something is broken or loose or obviously worn-out or broken or else. dozens of parts in suspension-steering.
