How can i make more torque?

I have a 1996 ek honda civic with a stock d16y7 motor. I haul a lot of weight on a regular basis and have larger tires and do a lot of road tripping that require loading my car with camping gear. Are there any simple ways to give my car more torque for the weight without sacrificing reliability, top speed, or fuel economy?

Swapping to a larger displacement engine will probably be the only way to gain a meaningful amount of torque while keeping OEM reliability.

i have a d16y8 motor laying around. I need a crank shaft though. If i bored the block like 15 over and still kept it within hondas 20 over recommended range would i feel any difference with that?

Re: How can i make more torque?

bore is more for power, stroke provides more torque
don't remember if any camshaft for 6th gen that worked in the entire range...

B20 engines used to be the choice for that, but then it will be a large swap type. There are the V6 swaps, but they even more complicated

Re: How can i make more torque?

you can ask these guys about what you want, maybe they have something of use:

http://www.gude.com/

there is also these, but mind you, i never owned a 6th gen, so just giving pointers. Skunk 2 is typically geared more toward high RPM power.

you can also go to honda-tech, they have a lot more engine mod people around that we do here (yeah, sad but true...)

.....

For the amount of money and effort involved in doing that you could b-swap and still be cheaper and have bigger gains

that skunk2 one seems like a pretty good bet. I was thinking about cams. I didnt want to bother with pulling my engine or installing a whole turbo system. The way my car is built id have a hard time properly installing a turbo not to mention a cam is half the price of a turbo kit. I wanted a cam that kept the stock lift on the valves so i could keep the stock springs and retainers but instead have a longer duration. But what if since duration is one way i could go. Could i just tune my car with the stock cam and have it spray more fuel in with the lift and duration i already have?
