daily driver, turbo or no?
daily driver, turbo or no?
Currently my car has 135k miles on it(00 ex d16y8). Basically stock except a SRI. I will be getting a magnaflow exhaust and a high flow cat for sure. I am almost positive towards the end of the year I'll be doing a B16A2 obd2 swap, everywhere I go they say they average anywhere from 30k-60k miles. I plan on keeping this car for a while.
This is my only car and I drive it about 200-250 miles a week. I would like to get a turbo, but is it worth it if I drive that much? I want everything to last. Basically I want to be able to run it gently to work but have that extra power everywhere else if I ever "needed" it. I know I'll have to get rid of my SRI, not a problem, but need pointers for this possible setup.
As for power, 250-300hp sounds nice. I don't want to have to do a lot of expensive internal upgrades as soon as I get it. Would stock b16 be able to handle this? Would I need to upgrade if I got a ported head/turbo? I just have a thing where I feel I need my car to be able to "breathe" the best, so I was looking at a larger throttle body/ported head
thoughts, recommendations?....
i know there's a ton of topics like this, I'm sorry
also:
I noticed the JDM version of the b16a2 puts out 170 at the crank, while the USDM version puts out 160. Could I get the JDM engine instead with no problem and have it go right it just like the USDM b16?

This may help you as far as JDM motors.

As far as a turbo for the b16 goes. There are many out there and as long as you are willing to spend the money for the parts and the install it is definitely worth it. For the most part with that type of engine the boost you would be running would be anywhere from 5-9 psi. And in that range it wouldn't be hazardous for day-to-day driving. When you start to raise the pis and beat on the motor at higher psi you run the risk of damaging some parts. With most turbo kits it will come with ready to handle parts so it should be good at the recommended psi and the b16 is a solid motor. Dont excessively beat on it and i would say you were good to go. I would have one but its a new car and i dont have the money. GLHF

300hp is a pretty big number to shoot for if you are still undecided about turbocharging. Just look at some of the bigger turbo threads on here and you'll get realistic ideas of what goes into making that much power.

Don't buy a kit...build your own using parts from other kits. If you want a reliable setup, use a GReddy 2-row or 3-row FMIC core, an insulated and ported cast-iron header (less likely to crack than stainless steel), and an internally wastegated Garett T25 BB turbo. Use slightly bigger injectors, and a piggyback ECU setup, and tune it for 5psi of boost. With a cam and a ported head, you should easily be able to make 225fwhp on about 5lbs. of boost with this setup. Tune it for a little more boost if you want, because I've heard that B16A2s are safe and reliable up to around 250fwhp. I reccomend the T25 BB because it is one of the smallest Garrett-design GT series ball bearing turbos you can buy. They are very reliable, spool up instantly, and will produce up to 270fwhp. A few tips for any turbo setup: buy a large oil cooler, and a large radiator, make sure the turbo oil return line is on a constant downward slope to the oil pan, and buy a boost leak tester as well.
