Subwoofer very distorted and dull sounding
Subwoofer very distorted and dull sounding
So if anyone has read up on my other threads, after all my overheating and wiring issues I got my new L7 kicker running final impedance of 4-ohms at 500w rms into my kicker 1000.1
It was sounding amazing for about 2 weeks and all of a sudden, the sub sounds like ****. it sounds distorted and almost like its blown.
So tonight a little while ago, I took my friend's kicker comp dual box out of his car and connected in to my kicker 1000.1 and it didnt sound distorted as well so that made me think think that my brand new L7 is fine.
My radio is Pioneer DEH-P7800mp. Its about 5 years old but always has been amazing radio and worked great!!
I'm completely stumped. any ideas people?
Please!!

Re: Subwoofer very distorted and dull sounding
Are you sure u tuned the amp down to 500rms?
You could be over clipping it...by a lot, which can destroy a sub in no time.
make sure you have ABSOLUTELY NO BASS BOOST on
& make sure your pos/neg speaker wires are correct

Half gain does not mean half power bro
Get a DMM, and set it properly. You are probably going to destroy your subs with too much clipping

What you said makes it seem that your sub is the problem.
Did you try connecting your sub to his amp?

Re: Subwoofer very distorted and dull sounding
Did you put the sub through it's break in period or did you just go all out with the bass pumping? The sub should actually sound bad for the first 20 hours or so then sound better. It's very possible that you have already destroyed the new sub, or you changed some setting to a crossover or something that changed the frequency range. A sub should rarely be set above 70 or 80 Hz. The idea behind a sub is to produce the frequencies that are felt, no so much heard. If you were putting in frequencies up to 120Hz then changed it to 80Hz, it would sound different. Make sure you recheck the crossover.
And as Kenny said. gain at half is not half power. When you tune it, you need to make sure you set the controls at the settings you actually use. If you set the bass setting to +3 and the sub level to +9 then make sure you tune it that way. If you tune it with everything flat, but don't listen to it that way, you just defeated the point of tuning it.

Just questioning this word. Are you saying his sounded distorted like your sub or didn't sound distorted?

Seems low to me but none of settings were touched and sub worked great for two straight weeks before this distortion thing started happening!
ALSO ABOUT DESTROYING MY SUB OR MY SUB BEING BAD ALREADY, I TESTED IT BY HOOKING UP THE IPOD DIRECTLY TO AMP AND IT DID'NT SEEM TO SOUND DISTORTED!

I agree with nickrolando

Re: Subwoofer very distorted and dull sounding
The voltage from the RCA is always going to be very low
Looking @ the kicker 1000.1 manual, i can see how the dials look.
Make sure the auto turn on is set to 12V DC
Then if your input level is on low, set it to high, see if that makes it better
if not, keep it on low (vice versa)
and also looking @ the manual:
Then properly tune the amp with that DIY guide i posted.
With the DMM on the speaker output, not the RCA
Assuming you have a DVC L7, I would wire it to 2 ohms, use a 60hz -6db tune and tune it to ~32V

No or Low Output?
1) Check the balance and fader control on source unit 2) Check the RCA (or
speaker input) and speaker output connections
Reduced Bass Response?
Check system phasing by reversing a speaker connection from positive to
negative on the stereo/subwoofer channel(s); if the bass improves, the speaker was out of phase.

Not sure how much access you have to another system to swap out parts but if you do, try changing out the amp and then the head unit with someone elses to narrow down the issue.
You did check the settings on the head unit and amp, right?

you need to check the amp output to the speakers, not the RCA's.
