beep for key in ignition
beep for key in ignition
Hi,
I'm new here so hello to all.
I've a 2000 Civic DX 2 door and want to make it so I can listen to the radio with my door(s) open with out the "key in ignition" beep.
I know I could simply disconnect the wire from the door switch but I don't want to lose the "lights on beep". I guess I could also connect the radio to an "always on" circuit but a dead battery is too much at risk (I have a 3 year old that thinks he can drive and does at times).
I do notice that the keys in beep begins as soon as the very tip of the key enters the ignition so is there a particular wire feed that connects to the, if I may say, ignition switch key door that could be disconnected without causing harm to who knows what?
Thanks and have fun
Selvan

Re: beep for key in ignition
Well, I installed an on/off push button switch inside the factory door momentary switch so now all I have to do is push the factory door switch in all the way to disable/enable the ding ding ding.

Re: beep for key in ignition
Give us more information, sounds like a good fix. Is the pushbutton switch used a common one ??
I have though about a disable switch on the drivers door before, Constant power to the radio did not work out at all for me (did I turn off my radio ??)

Re: beep for key in ignition
Without spending much time looking for a perfect match, I bought a switch that looked similar to THIS one from Radio Shack.
Using a hack saw, I shaved off opposite sides of the red button so it would fit into the back of the factory switch. I then used plastic epoxy to mold the three (any three) flat edges of the black portion of the switch (where the red button slides into the switch) to the factory switch (one end edge (the one closets to the center of the factory switch where there is a plastic rod like thing extending way out inside the black portion of the factory switch) and two side edges). And the wiring is simply inline with the single ground fed wire right at the switch.
It took a couple attempts before I got it right and in doing so, I accidentally broke off the factory spade and ended up having to crimp one on and force slide it into the factory switch (not much to solder to after it's been broken off.
The reason it broke so maybe you can avoid it:
I initially had it bent just right and was able to slide it back into the car frame with the Radio Shack switch molded on so the re-install was done. But it shorted out (the Radio Shack switch wire end was hitting the car frame on the inside). And in taking it all out and re-inserting I bent it too much and it broke off.
All said and done, it works like a champ.
