99 VP - Rear Brake Shoes won't adjust automatically
I'm having problems with the rear brakes shoes staying in adjustment on my 99 VP.
I adjust the rear brakes via the rear hole in the backing plate and the brake pedal feels great (high and hard) until the shoes wear, then the pedal gradually gets lower.
Background:
I replaced the original factory rear brakes shoes after they wouldn't pass inspection (82,000 miles). Prior to this, the brake pedal was always high and hard with the original shoes.
After removing the original shoes, I cleaned the all the hardware and lubricated the touch points on the backing plate and the star wheel adjuster; nothing is seized or binding.
After installing the aftermarket shoes, I made sure the adjusting tab was installed correctly and touching the star wheel adjuster, then adjusted the brakes and flushed the fluid in the entire brake system. The pedal felt great; high and hard.
The problems is after several hundred miles, the shoes wear and the pedal gradually gets lower because the automatic adjusters aren't working correctly. I have to manually adjust the shoes via the hole in the rear baking plate to get a good pedal again.
I never touched or adjusted the Emergency Brake. After I adjust the rear shoes, the E-Brake stops after 5 clicks.
What am I overlooking? I lubricated everything and made sure the adjusting tab is resting on the star-adjuster with tension from the spring holding it down.
Why won't the tab apply enough pressure to turn the star-adjuster?
Can it be the aftermarket brake shoes?
The drums are original and were never turned because they feel smooth and I never felt a vibration.
