1999 Honda Civic EX

  1. Hey guys. My YouTube Mechanic skills are confused & I need help. Trying (1st time ever) to replace the front passenger side axle on my car. I need a step to be clear before I start. Is there a cotter pin that i need to remove before I even touch the Axle nut? 🤔I was thinking that a cotter pin didn't come into play until I got to the lower ball joint. Also someone told me I need to punch a piece out from around the actual bolt to be able to get a socket around it 😳... Is this true? I just wouldn't think I'd be Hammering through pieces in my attempt to FIX my car. 🤨So I had to come to The Pro's for answers 😎
  2. Lord knows I don't need nobody poking holes behind my back 😄. Thanks yall

Re: 1999 Honda Civic EX

Axle nut is usually staked in place. Take a chisel, punch, flathead screwdriver and a mallet/hammer/banging tool of choice to unstake it. From there, you can take that bad boy out. I'll do some searching to show you what it'd look like.

Edit: prolly not a civic, but same idea.

see how the axle nut is dented in place into the slot on the outboard end of the axle? Yeah, that's a staked in nut. Undent that part and you're home free, provided you have a 32mm/1.25" socket

Edit 2: as far as cotter pins go, yeah, just ball joints and tie rods, iirc. It's been a minute since I've tinkered with those. Tie rods for sure. Like 95% sure on the ball joint one.

Edit 3: pretty straightforward video I found
