Crazy speedometer and engine light help
Hi everyone! First off, I am a girl with very little mechanical skill so please excuse me if I have any terms mixed upz I have a 97 civic with 223k miles that has always been very reliable. Today, while driving the speedometer started going crazy, jumping from 0 to 100 and back, check engine light came on. The car did not lose all power that I saw, but did not want to go and I was barely able to pull it into a gas station. This all happened within about 30 seconds. The mechanic looked at it, said it had a short. He replaced a fuse (15 it says on it) and gave me a couple extras. He said he would need to retrace the car another day and that should solve the problem. It was able to drive after this (just went about 5 miles so far) but the check engine light is still on and the speedometer stays at 0. I should also mention the car had been sitting for a while up until about a month ago and had some leaks, since then it’s been regularly driven. Not sure if it’s related, but it has had an ongoing issue with “revving” (or the rpms going up) when in idle. Do you think that retracing the car will solve the issue or do you think it’s something else? Thank you so much to anyone who answers this, I am desperate and truly appreciate any help. Update: the fuse that was replaced was fuse 15, which according to my manual correlated with the alternator and sp sensor.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Print it and find someone who can actually make sure this is what happened, and do this repair

Check coolant level in the radiator, and check for sticking IAC valve, check for vacuum leaks?
