Crank No start 99 Civic Si
Crank No start 99 Civic Si
Hello all,
I have a 99 civic si with a 99 Cr-v B20Z swap that was done by the previous owner. The car was running fine until the other day when i did some work to it. I took off the distributor to be able to reach the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor as it was not working. I then replaced the distributor back the way i took it out and drained the oil so that i could change the oil pan gasket as it was leaking pretty good. After reinstalling the oil pan and letting the car sit the rest of the day as it was dark when i finished all this, i went out the next day to start the car and it will crank all day long but not actually start. I have already verified that the plugs are getting spark by placing them into the plug wire and placing the plug on the valve cover and it did spark. The plugs are also getting fuel it seems as i hear the fuel pump prime when i turn the key on and the plugs are wet after trying to crank the car. I have also removed the #1 plug and set the #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and then realigned the distributor so that the button is facing the #1 plug on the rotor cap and ensuring that the plugs that go into the camshaft were inserted correctly when reinstalling the distributor. I have also verified that the plug order is correct from the plugs to the distributor in order of 1-3-4-2. I am running out of ideas on what could be causing this thing to not start. I appreciate any and all help you can give me.
Thanks

IDK what's wrong but heres some thoughts
You replaced the ECT and now it sounds like it's flooded or flooding because the plugs are wet. Too much fuel being injected, or is it leftover fuel from previous ECT issue?
Can you deflood it?
Is the new sensor bad? (can you read PCM data?)
Compression low, cranks fast?

I do not believe it is flooded but could be wrong, the compression was fine when i checked before but i do not have a way to check it currently. The new sensor works as far as i can tell.i have no way to read the pcm data either.

If the plugs an d cylinders are soaking wet, try drying them out.
Then hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking it.

Re: Crank No start 99 Civic Si
So i tried putting in another set of plugs that were dry and tried cranking it and after a few cranks removed them and they too are covered in fuel, not sure what is causingit to flood when im not using the gas pedal.

Re: Crank No start 99 Civic Si
Remove plugs and let them dry again.....
Disconnect harness from distributor (to disable spark) and I might unplug the 4 fuel injectors so they can't squirt more gas into the engine.....
then place a towel over the spark plug holes, then crank it over several times with the plugs out to try to blow out standing gasoline from the cylinders.
Compression.
Fuel.
Spark.
They have to be in the correct quantities and happen at the correct times.
Which of the above isn't right?
If compression is low from flooding, I might dump a teaspoon of engine oil into each cylinder so the rings can seal again.

Re: Crank No start 99 Civic Si
A flooded engine can be hell to get started again. Keep trying.
If the plugs got splashed with oil when it tried to fire up, wash them off (brake parts cleaner?)
If the plugs are still soaking in gas, dry them off.
I'd leave the injectors unplugged.....try again.... after it fires, tries to run, then stalls because it has burned the excess fuel from the cylinders, reconnect injectors and try some more?

Re: Crank No start 99 Civic Si
Still have not been able to get the car to start, have let the plugs dry out overnight and then reinstalled the next day and have tried to crank with the injectors unplugged and still they come out wet. I am trying to leave them out entirely for a few days and see if that helps some of the gas maybe evap from inside the cylinders. Otherwise I am out of ideas and have not other options to try. Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: Crank No start 99 Civic Si
See if the new sensor is bad...a bad temp sensor can make the computer inject far too much fuel.
Compression test ....or oil the cylinders to help regain some compression
Repeat whatever got you that far?

it almost started, it was the closest it has been to actually starting.
