NEED HELP! Civic won't run over 2000 rpms while in gear!
Hi guys, I'm hoping you can give me a hand in diagnosing this problem for my Civic. I'll start from the top:
I have a 98 Civic, 2 Door, Manual Transmission.
I got out of work one day to find that my battery was shot when I went to start my car. So I got a buddy to take me to autozone to buy a brand new battery. I swapped out the battery, and then ran into a bad starter and bad connection problem at the battery terminals. I bought a brand new starter, installed it, and cleaned up my terminals. Car started and ran completely fine at idle, and drove it around just a bit in the parking lot. The next day, I started up my car with no problems, let the car warm up, and drove off to work. About 5 minutes into driving while I was in 2nd gear, the car immediately lost acceleration and started to bog out. I couldn't get the car to rev over 2000rpm and was stuck going at maybe 10mph tops. Shifted down into first and cruised at 10mph back home. The check engine light came on soon afterward. My original guess is it's a bad sensor somewhere? maybe TPS or TDC sensor? However, I also noticed my Oil Pressure light intermittently turns on for about 5-10 seconds or so, then goes away. Checked my oil, and pretty low...maybe a quart or so. Maybe i'm just low on oil? I checked to see if it was a connection problem somewhere, but it looks all fine under the hood. Also, the car can rev to redline when it's in neutral/idle with no problems. I thought about driving my car over to auto zone to check for codes, but the nearest one is about 10 miles away, and I'm not sure my car can make it in the state that its in.
Any ideas???
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks

The check engine light came on soon afterward.
BUY ONE they can be had for like $20 sometimes.
Also, haven't you refilled the oil yet?

Engine leaking and/or burning oil?
Wouldn't expect the oil light to come on if it's only a quart low. Top off with oil to see if oil light stops flickering also, clean the connections on the oil sending unit.
While in neutral will the engine rev past 2K rpm's? The clutch may be worn and slipping. Have you tried shifting from 1st to 3rd (bypassing 2nd)?

alright so I finally got a code reader (i ordered it from amazon for $20).
Reader pulled code P1106 and pending code P1106 P.
BARO circuit range/ performance?
Possible bad MAP sensor?
Possible bad ECU? (i hope not)
Clogged intake? (i'll check to make sure...)

yes i can totally rev past 2K rams in neutral. I can redline it with no problem. Haven't tried bypassing to 3rd yet though...

Check for anything that might be an inlet air restriction as that could cause the code. Leaves, paper, plastic bag, dog food (rodents), dirty wet air filter, and the like.
The computer is comparing MAP and BARO values during certain periods of wide open throttle and if they don't closely match what it expects to see, it sets the code.

There's a service info bulletin on that code, just for checking stuff like this FIRST.....

Wow...Got pics of that?
EDIT: That $20 code reader is a helluva investment, yes?

you're map is bad, but more importantly I think you've got a bad alternator. Engine is literally running off the battery and that's why in neatral it runs good, but under a load it won't......also, I'd keep your catalytic converter in mind as being clogged from a bad o2 sensor at one time or another........ Just giving you some ideas hereonQUOTE=ezone;4705397]There's a service info bulletin on that code, just for checking stuff like this FIRST.....
