Puzzling low power after engine swap on D16Y8
Puzzling low power after engine swap on D16Y8
I recently swapped a motor on a 2000 EX, the donor motor came out of a 1996, both D16Y8's. Car runs fine but won't rev fast and seems like real turd. Old motor snapped a rod. I was thinking there may be a fuel issue or injector issue.new fuel filter, timing belt, etc.
very low on power , only code is P1457 so I doubt that's it.
Maybe a bad cat, but no codes for cat.
Could there be that much difference between the 96 and the 2000?
Im trying to sell but hate to let it go like it is.
HELP!!!

Automatic or manual transmission?
Check mechanical timing..may have jumped a tooth or more. Some turds are cool..lol
Could be as simple as needing a new gas cap. Read: http://honda-tech.com/honda-civic-de...olved-3008037/

FYI the cat can be plugged without setting a cat code...... the cat monitor requires a couple drive cycles before it can make a judgement about the cat, and if it won't run good enough to drive....
Get the picture?
Unbolt the exhaust and see if it will rev up?

Manual tranny
Already replaced gas cap, I don't think the P1457 code is reason for slow takeoff, car runs and drives, holds 75 no problem , replaced fuel filters
I did replace timing belt, slim possibility it's off .
It feels like plugged cat, but since no codes I thought maybe that wouldn't be it
I will disconnect exhaust and try this week.

Got a code reader? Can it tell you if OBD monitors have completed? See if the cat monitor has completed yet.
A plugged cat (or exhaust, or intake) will limit maximum exhaust (or air) flow.
If you floor the gas pedal and run 2nd gear all the way to redline....does the engine pull hard all the way to redline, or does it peter out and lose significant power before redline?
Wrong cam timing can cause various performance problems, most will be very evident as low RPM loss of power, but depending on how far off could still run "decent" at higher RPM.

You can hold gas down to boards in each gear, it takes forever to build power, once it hits 6000 plus it then feels like correct power, possible when Vtec hits

Paper clip, and a timing light....Service manual...
Jumper SCS connector with paper clip, then use timing light to check ignition timing against specs, follow the service manual.
The cam timing MUST be correct before bothering ignition timing though. If cam timing isn't perfect it will cause ignition timing to be way off, probably 10-20 deg per tooth error.
