manual steering 97 civic dx

I am having steering problems with my 97 civic dx...at first it squeaked a lot like the suspension needed a lube ,then the steering got progressively worse(harder to turn the steering wheel and make turns)....recently saw some oily brown residue on an otherwise clean driveway where I park the car daily...it looks like something in the steering system is leaking and is causing this problem...any insights on my problem...once again this is manual steering not power...Thanks in advance.....Neal

I might disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles, that way the rack is isolated away from the suspension, you can make sure each wheel pivots freely to eliminate those as possible causes, and see that the rack is still binding. Then maybe disconnect the steering column from the rack to make sure the issue is not in the column.

You'll have to locate the source of the leak to know for sure where it came from.
