1999 DX Exhaust Manifold replacement issue in California

I'm stuck with a cracked manifold and the CEL on. I checked around and the shop says they will charge me $500+ for an OEM one but I can't afford that right now. Any suggestions? My brother has an EX would that exhaust manifold fit on a DX? Thanks in advance!

Why is the CEL on? What's the code?

Aftermarket C.A.R.B. approved replacement cat should be a choice.

Braze the cracks shut?

I would also like to know the code(s) out of curiosity and exactly where the manifold is cracked. Autozone checks codes free in case you didnt know. Ezone has been helping on another thread with with my codes and cracked manifold if they are even related.

EX exhaust manifold is different than DX. DX has cat vertical inside engine bay then downpipe to long b pipe that has a 2 BOLT CONNECTION. EX has cat beneath engine horizontal connected directly to long b pipe that has a 3 BOLT CONNECTION. So no, you cannot swap DX and EX manifolds.

Some people have said they are not allowed to do this in California.
Maybe they let one borrow or rent their code reader and DIY instead?

They come out to your car with you and read codes. They also have the readers for rent here. Then there's the dealership that will read codes free too here. Ive used both. Lots more places probably.

Autozone will not read codes in California (Ca law).

A repair shop will.

You might be able to get the crack welded for $1-200, but how long will the cat last?

New cali manifolds start at about $400.

Doesn't Kali have a limit on what you have to spend if it is emissions related? I recall when I lived there in the 90's there was a $500 limit on the cost of repairs if you failed a smog test and the car wasn't tampered with.

I have never heard of that. But it could be true.

Call around salvage yards and asked them for both You-pull or they pull prices for a used DX manifold. Either way, make sure to inspect the used part for cracks before purchase.

Your manifold crack can be welded but, general consensus is that in many cases it fails within months.

Aftermarket: https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raf...rttype=5808&ck[ID]=0&ck[idlist]=0&ck[viewcurrency]=USD&ck[PHP_SESSION_ID]=96ou6f5fafc4co4d4644tkff22

a.k.a. cat-back design on EX and Si models. Can't do a direct swap but, can be done with some modifications: Google..there's several threads for DYI.

That might not pass in Cali. as it's not the original configuration for that particular vehicle/VIN.
