2000 dx coupe, 5 speed. Out of nowhere today when leaving for work, I let out the clutch and the car shuddered as if the throwout bearing was failing. I've seen this come on slowly in other cars before, but never suddenly like this. Is it simply time to do the clutch? Or is something else causing this?

In my umpteen years of being a mechanic (cars and heavy truck), Clutch shudder is usually caused by a warped clutch disc, bad pressure plate springs, oil/grease has came in contact with the disc friction material, or a sticking release fork.
A throwout bearing usually makes noise or have excessive travel play and makes it hard to release the clutch... But before pulling the trans, make sure the slave cylinder is returning smoothly.

yeah sounds like warpage to me , id suggest having a new clutch installed and make sure the flywheel gets resurfaced.
