Re: new cam compensation
depends on what stage you go. I can only speak for the research I've done on the 7thgen, but stage 1 requires no mods. Stage 2/3 requires titanium retainers and springs, along with fuel management, and maybe some head notching.
Re: new cam compensation
right right... but idk i dont want to get a stage 1 cam and than have to buy a stage 2 or 3 after. I dont think that would be cost effective considering i have to do some of the things you mentioned (titanium retainers etc) anyways. If anything ill do stage 2 so its nothing too crazy but their was some compensation along with it.

Re: new cam compensation
Just to throw prices at you, to give you an idea of what you're getting into. Again, using 7thgen numbers, because that's what I know.
All crower cams (stage 1, stage 2 N/A, Stage 2 turbo, stage 3) for the D17A2 are all the same price: ~$390
Titanium springs/retainer kit required for stage 2/3: ~$300
Fuel management: $500-1000+
Tuning costs: usually about $100/hr (one place I've visited charges $150 for the first hour, $100 per hour after that)
Just a cherry on top, a good accessory gauge to have is a wideband a/f gauge: ~$300
The good tune is what's going to make or break the setup. A crap tune can end up costing you an engine. That said, more experienced tuners that know exactly what they're doing tend to get more expensive.
Putting all that together, for a stage 1, you're looking at ~$400. That's not including any sealant (rtv) or gaskets you may need to replace in the process. For a stage 2 or 3, assuming you find a good EMS for $600 and tuning takes 2 hours, you're looking at about $1800-1900, just for the cam. Just some food for thought.

Re: new cam compensation
again, the stage 1 that does not need any other changes are the ones for D17A2.
Looking at this site here, i assume the cams are interchangeable between the B18A1 and the B20B, but don't quote me on that. You might need call the manufacturer for if that true.

If above is true, looking at the Crower site, there's no stage 1 either. but you could get some info there, or just call them for details.

other than that, what xRiceboyx said should be heeded - he knows why the tune is the most important piece by experience
